I have to preface this by saying I think The Tour are bang out of order here. Marcus Fraser, in my opinion, did little or nothing wrong. AND is entitled to his opinion. If anyone can convince me otherwise, I will amend this post.
Facebook has been brilliant for guys like me. I have loads of facebook friends who play on the European Tour. The banter is good, and we get to see the social side of the guys, when the cameras and recorders are off.
Now however it seems the European Tour have arrived on Facebook with a big stick and an even bigger gag!
It seems European Tour Big Brother is now scanning our facebook profiles after Marcus Fraser was hit with one of the biggest fines ever dealt out on Tour, after a facebook rant. The fine, said to be 10,000 quid, came after they spotted the Aussie having a dig, involving some flowery language, about a fellow player.
It all surrounds an incident which happened at the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles when Rafa Echenique, who was headed for a missed cut, decided on the 16th tee to ring the airline and rearrange his flight! You may find this hard to believe but apparently a player is allowed to use his phone on the course, as long as he is not getting tips. You wouldn’t even try it in a club comp!
No sooner had Marcus had a go at Echenique on his own ‘Facebook’ page but he was lamped by the European Tour and fined for ‘Bringing the Tour into disrepute’. What?
“I also want nothing to do anymore with Marcus Fraser. I just want to move on and put this behind me,” Echenique said from his mobile phone while putting on the 18th yesterday!
Come on European Tour, Marcus Fraser did very little wrong here to warrant such a harsh punishment. I’d be pissed if a guy took out his phone on the tee too! And what were you guys doing on his facebook page? Unfriend!!
