So Tiger was playing the Greenbrier Classic for the first time. Why? Because he was getting well paid to do it. The whispers from my trusted sources inside the ropes on the PGA Tour say Woods got $2 million dollars to appear, while Phil Mickelson got the same $1 million as last year. Now the fact that both missed the weekend cut has left tournament supremo Jim Justice with egg on his face.
There was even some rough justice for Justice as his employee Mickelson had to incur a one-stroke penalty on the 11th green when his ball marker fell out of his hand, hit his ball and moved it.
It’s thought the appearance money is paid by the player invoicing a business that is a sponsor or involved in the event for consultancy/personal services provided during the event.
Phil blamed feeling lethargic and putting badly whilst Tiger blamed the air for not being able to club correctly. I’m told the appearance fee was not conditional on making the weekend.
