Gerry McIlroy will get his hands more than the Claret Jug if son Rory wins this week.
Such faith has he in his son that Gerry and three friends grouped together when Rory was 15 to bet £100 per man that he would win the Open Championship by 2014. Since the bet was placed eight years ago and nobody had even heard of Rory back then, they got odds of 500/1.
The £400 wager will pay out a dividend of £200,000. if Rory wins this week or next year’s Open; it’s believed the betting slip says “by the time he is 25”. Now that is what I call foresight!
