Family and friends of Jose Maria Olazabal have reported excessive beard growth as the Spaniard faces a potentially disastrous Ryder Cup headache just days before the tournament is set to begin in Medinah Chicago.

During a week off to “write speeches and figure out logistics” the Ryder Cup Captain noticed the glaring height difference between star European player Rory McIlroy and his tennis playing giraffe girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki.

“This could be highly embarrassing for us in the Team parade at the opening ceremony”, said Olazabal, “It’s all about a show of strength.  Us bringing out a dwarf McIlory could hand the Americans a huge advantage even before we start.  Caroline must be two feet taller than Rory, it’s like that film Twins with Schwarzenegger and deVito.”

The European Tour are meeting this morning with Olazabal to consider remedial action to bridge the height gap before the crucial parade.  It’s believed the options are

Option 1. Adding a hair attachment to boost the size of McIlroy’s afro.  Top hairdressers believe an extra 3/4 of a foot can be added to Rory’s mop before it becomes unstable in the wind.  This technique is called Double Wiggage.

Option 2. Adding very special lifts to McIlory’s shoes.  These risers were developed for Tom Cruise for his role in the film Mission Impossible and are known in the movie industry colloquially as “Stilts”.

Option 3. Cutting Caroline Wozniacki’s legs off just above the ankle.  This would leave the former number one with stubs instead of feet and most certainly end her tennis career.  Experts believe this, however to be the most popular option and the one least likely to impact on McIlroy’s all important Ryder Cup performance.

More as it emerges, or gets cut off, as the case may be.

The Course

East Lake Golf Club was designed by Tom Bendelow and redesigned by Donald Ross. As well as being home to the Tour Championship since 2004 East Lake is also well known as Bobby Jones' home course. A measure of the difficulty can immediately be seen by looking at the card; the par-3 18th can play 235 yards from the back.
Players hitting fairways off the tee have a huge advantage here. The rough is always tough.
After Tiger Woods got it to 23under in 2007, Rees Jones was employed to convert the greens from Bentgrass to Bermuda. That moved brought the course from statistically the easiest par 70 on the PGA Tour that year to one of the toughest since. Since 2008, the four round score hasn't been lower than 9-under 271.

Phil Mickelson 12/1

philmickelson_head With Tiger and Rory pretty much unbackable at 4/1 with most bookies there’s much better value for Phil Mickelson each way from 12/1. That’s not to say Leftie can’t win this week. He shot a final round of 65 in 2009 at East Lake on his way to winning and has two other top 10’s since 2008 besides. Phil will be fancying a tilt at the big money this week after his fourth in the Deutsche Bank and tied second at the BMW.

Adam Scott 18/1

theadamscotts I think Adam Scott left this tournament after him last year with a third round of 74. In the end he only lost out by two shots and will rue that Saturday performance. An in-form Scott can win at East Lake, a feat he accomplished back in 2006. Eleven out of his twelve rounds in the Deutsche Bank and BMW have been in the sixties, good enough for two top sevens and an each way shout this week.

Jim Furyk 22/1

furyk With only 30 players in the field this week, it’s hard to get really long odds and at first glance you might think Jim Furyk’s odds are pretty mean. However when you look at his Atlanta record, you’ll see they’re not. A win, a second and two more top seven finishes in the last six stagings is a pretty awesome record around here. That win came in 2010 edging out Luke Donald (he also won the Fed Ex Cup). He’s had his fair share of bad luck recently but Furyk loves these tough tracks.

Sergio Garcia 25/1

sergio_garcia_branding With his win at the Wyndham, third in the Barclays and 24th at the BMW Sergio has clocked up an impressive 33 under par total for the three events. El Nino has always been a man for tougher tracks with his ball striking ability and he came close here in 2008, losing in a playoff to Camilo Villegas.

Previous Top 10’s

jiyah shin A doff of the cap goes to Jiyai Shin who braved, let’s face it, “mental” conditions to win the Women's British Open at Royal Liverpool.

Apparently Captain Sig Hansen and the crew of The Northwestern from Deadliest Catch sent a letter of congratulations to Shin following her win saying “conditions on the golf course made the Bering Sea look like a duck pond”.

Pic: Jiyai Shin immediately after the win

Shin turned a three-shot lead after 54 holes into a nine shot win after everybody else basically gave up and went home.

This is one that will have the marketing geniuses shaking their heads.  While they are busy trying to tell us that brand spanking new clubs have lower and deeper CG’s, thinner faces and higher COR’s, here’s Phil Mickelson ambling out to his garage, finding a nine year old club, putting it back in his bag and nailing it.

Mickelson tied for second using a 2003 issue Titleist 980F 5-Wood (17°) with a Graphite Design PM 902 shaft.  His Callaway paymasters (who he switched to from Titleist in 2004) wont be too happy that he ditched his Callaway RAZR Fit 5-wood (18°) with the Titleist.

There’s only place you can buy the Titleist 980F these days and that’s at  If you’ve never been on the Golfbidder site, you should check it out.  As well as all the new releases Golfbidder have a huge range of pre-owned gems.  Mickelson’s Titleist 980F starts at £49 on Golfbidder. Monty, who really really wants to be Ryder Cup Captain again, and to bypass lads like Bjorn, Clarke and McGinley in the queue showed he’s not 100% concentrated self absorbed by wanting to keep himself out of the players and officials way at this year’s Ryder Cup.

monty ryder cup funny pic[3] Selfless Monty revealed he has been invited to, but turned down official ex-captainy roles at the Opening Ceremony, the Gala Dinner and the Closing Ceremony.

So how is he keeping out of the limelight? By doing up his garden during the matches?  By spending time with the wife and kids?  Not at all. By commentating for Sky of course! And throwing the odd kidney punch at Ollie over the televisual waves.

“I’ve been invited to all three events but then I am commentating for Sky on the Opening Ceremony, so I can’t be in two places at one time.  I’m afraid I will leave the Gala Dinner to the teams as I don’t want to be part of that.  Again, the Closing Ceremony I will be commentating, so I have politely declined all three. That’s not my role and I don’t want to get in the way of Ollie as it’s his week, as it is for Davis, so it’s not a week for former captains.”

The rumour mill is spinning lately about Rory McIlroy making a switch to the swoosh, and with Bloomberg reporting their shares up 3.4% this year, all looks rosy with Nike.

Nike’s golf business received another boost yesterday with the announcement of the granting of a patent to put data-collecting sensors on golf clubs to improve the fitting process.  It’s trackman like technology embedded on the back of Nike club’s head which provides data immediately on a screen during a club fitting session.

The patent deals with sensor technology at 100 points across the head of the club that uses accelerometers and gyroscopes (similar to those in an iphone) to record clubhead head, club face angle at impact, hitting pattern on the face etc.

The result would be a club-fit better and more precisely than ever before.  The major advantage this technology would give is to allow fitting on the golf course proper under playing  conditions as opposed to the current trial and error system indoors or in a fitting centre at the range.

With annual turnover in the billions globally, their golf business ever growing and their star player Tiger in his mid thirties and injured, it all points to Nike making Rory McIlroy an offer he simply cannot refuse to become the new face of Nike Golf.  Sooner rather than later.  You can bet your gyroscope on it.

Hunter Mahan told US golf journo’s yesterday he might not be watching The Ryder Cup.

"I don't think so," Mahan said when asked if he would watch the matches on television.

hunter mahan_thumb[3][4] Surely that means Davis Love’s son’s decision not to pick him for the US Team is wholly justified.  I mean who would want a player on his team who doesn’t even have enough interest in the damn ‘exhibition’ to watch it on television?  Who wouldn’t want to watch his best friends in the whole world out there battling for their country against the oppressive old foe that stole some of their top companies for tax purposes, Europe? Come on Hunter.

Oh but hang on, that’s not it.  The Hunter says he wont be watching the Ryder Cup because it’s hard to deal with. "It's hard to watch something like that when you've been through it a few times, you know how much fun it is and you want to be there. Once you go to one, you don't want to miss it because you know how much fun they are."

Oh so that’s it.  Hunter and all the other kids had big ice-cream cones, and were all happy. Then  Hunter’s ice cream slips and falls to the ground and gets covered in stones.  Suddenly the fun is over, poor Hunter is crying and for some reason isn’t too keen on watching the other kids eat their ice-creams.

Watch the damn Ryder Cup Hunter.  Become a fan again.  Enjoy it for what it is.  Cheer on your friends. Be inspired by it to get back there.  Don’t turn your back on it because your ice-cream is on the ground.

If you’re a player who dreads your long iron shots, you have probably found a friend called Adams over the years.  They have been the leader in game improvement hybrid irons from the get go. Their new Idea Tech V4 Hybrid Irons, are yet another step forward. The Idea Tech V4 Hybrid Irons come with three hybrids (3-5) with 8620 carbon steel forged cavity back irons (6-PW).  There’s also an all hybrid set that might suit some.

Adams-Idea-Tech-V4-Hybrid-Irons_TopperThe hybrids on this set look to have borrowed the same technology as Nike use in the sole of their woods, the Compression Channel.  Adams call them  “velocity slots” and have them running from the crown to sole of the hybrids to give that extra bit of what I call “squeeze ‘n spring” off the face at impact.

Adams have also claimed to have engineered an even thinner clubface on these clubs and are quick to fire up slides showing 13 yards more carry than their Idea Tech V3 Hybrid.  That’s a bit like giving a kick in the arse to their own loyal customers who bought the previous model, but there you go.  “Shame on you for buying the Tech V3 Hybrid, now get out and buy the Tech V4 Hyrbid!”

There’s no arguing with the data though.  These Adams Hybrids produce the CT numbers of  a driver. CT is a white-coat and clipboard term for bounciness off the clubface.

The smoked finish is also classy. Expect to see the Adams Tech V4 Hybrid Irons  in the shops in late September.

Rory McIlroy threw the deck of cards that is this week’s biggest non story up in the air again today by now stating he may play for the tiny Pacific territory of Guam in the 2016 Olympic Games.

mcilroy A second Open Letter has been ghost written by a cleverdick solicitor employed by Horizon issued by McIlroy today via his Bebo page that has only 6 followers hinting that he will turn his back on both Ireland and Team GB, in favour of wearing the traditional sky blue mankini of Guam at Rio.

McIlroy said “I have always had a fondness for Guam. Guam has really helped me throughout my career.  I can see myself in Rio in 2016 with Guam.  Guam has been very good to me. As long as you don’t swallow it, it sticks to your guts you know.”

While McIlroy’s last comment has baffled reporters, there seems to be enough in there to make it official.

The 23 year old World Number 1 has already been installed as hot favourite for Guam’s Got Talent and bookies have suspended betting on McIlroy having the No. 1 chart single in Guam this Christmas.

The president of Guam was unavailable for comment this afternoon as he was attending a public stoning.  More as it emerges.

Francesco Molinari 12/1

fran The home favourite this week is sure to be Francesco Molinari who returns after a couple of weeks off to build up for the Ryder Cup. He will be hoping his form in the USA is better than that shown on his trips to the US PGA and WGC Bridgestone which were poor by his standards. However back in Europe the Italian has been superb with a good showing in Ireland followed by two runner-ups in Paris and Castle Stuart and then a sixth at Gleneagles last time out. Tied for eighth last year ranking 39th in putts per round.  Hopefuly Mama’s dolmio will do the trick this year!

Nicolas Colsaerts 15/1

Superman02 Another good performance at the KLM Open for Nico makes it two top 10’s in his last three starts. Really impressed with four rounds in the 60’s at the Wyndham Championship on the PGA Tour before jetting back for a decent finish at Gleneagles. Last week’s tied eighth included a super second round of 65. Nico played well at this venue in 2010 (when it was staged in May) finishing in a tie for third.

Pic: Coulthard. Dont be confused.

Thorbjorn Olesen 24/1

thor Thorbjorn took a week off after missing his first cut in six events in Switzerland and hopefully he will be back to his best this week. The Royal Park 1 Roveri course should suit the Dane, cumulatively he had the best stats of the field in 2011 when he tied second behind Robert Rock. It’s just his 57th Tour start this week and he has already notched up 11 top-10 finishes including a win at the Sicilian Open in April.

Scott Jamieson 65/1

scott Bang in form heading to Italy is Scott Jamieson who bounced back from a missed cut in Switzerland to tie for fourth at the KLM Open. That’s the Scot’s third top 10 of the season. Jamieson opened with a seven under 65 in the last staging so knows how to go low at the venue. Excellent value at 65/1.

Gregory Bourdy 55/1

The Frenchman has had a really solid Summer and finally scored his first top 10 of the season last week in Holland. His last win came in at the UBS Hong Kong Open in 2009 and signs are good that another may not be far off. Bourdy tied for 11th last year six shots off the pace. Worth an each way look.

ladygaga Whether you were Born This Way or took up the game recently you’ll be interested to hear that Lady GaGa’s concert promotion team have contacted the Carr Golf Centre at the Spawell in Dublin regarding the superstar dropping in to hit a few drives on Saturday morning before her gig at the Aviva Stadium.  The Paparazzi are already camped outside.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Apparently GaGa is a massive golf fan after being inspired to take up the game by lookalike Charley Hoffman.  The Hoff told her she could let down her hair at the refurbished 48 bay covered Driving Range, clip away the brand new TaylorMade range balls and hang out with the friendly new management at the Carr Golf Centre.

Rory McIlroy has given the strongest indication yet that he will choose to play for Great Britain over Ireland at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016.

PD*56635830Rors told the Daily Mail newspaper

"What makes it such an awful position to be in is I have grown up my whole life playing for Ireland under the Golfing Union of Ireland umbrella.  But the fact is, I've always felt more British than Irish. Maybe it was the way I was brought up, I don't know, but I have always felt more of a connection with the UK than with Ireland.

"And so I have to weigh that up against the fact that I've always played for Ireland and so it is tough. Whatever I do, I know my decision is going to upset some people but I just hope the vast majority will understand."

Peter Hanson may have won the KLM Open with an outrageous eagle on the last hole but his thoughts were thousands of miles away with his baby son in hospital.

peter hanson Hanson had almost pulled out of the event after the second round after hearing that young son, Tim, had been admitted to hospital in Orlando with a serious respiratory virus. However, doctors at the Arnold Palmer Children’s Hospital along with the Swede’s wife, Sanna, felt Hanson would be better staying in Holland fearing he could contract the virus and put and second Ryder Cup appearance in doubt.

Baby Tim turns two years old on November 17 and dad Peter always used a number 17 on his ball and his golf bag as a reminder.

The RS virus is a respiratory condition and is very common in young children. Hanson was given special permission to remain in contact on the phone during the final round.

"My older daughter, Stella who is five-and-a-half has just started school and she brought it back home so Tim has contracted it from her," said Hanson. "I spoke to the doctor and he said with the Ryder Cup coming up it might be possible I could also pick up the virus. So that's why we have Tim isolated in the Arnold Palmer Children's Hospital because my wife is now ill and so too is our nanny. The doctors said that when they cough it could be just so easy for me to pick up the virus and that's the last thing I need going to Medinah. I've been so worried about Tim I only got about 30 minutes sleep last night."

All are expected make a full recovery.

Here’s a story I picked up from the wires this morning about a guy from Nevada called Jeff Fleming who went berserk with a shotgun after a stray drive broke a flemingwindow in his house.  Irate Fleming, 53, shot at the pair he suspected on the 16th hole, hitting the man who hit his house. The golfer was not seriously injured; he was treated for minor pellet wounds to an arm and both legs.

According to neighbours “it’s not unusual for balls to strike the houses that line the fairways” at Lakeridge Golf Course.  All the homes were evacuated after the shooting, after Fleming could not be found. He was later arrested at his attorney’s office, where he surrendered. He was released early yesterday after posting $40,000 bail.

When Stewart Cink felt a dribble running down his leg at Celtic Manor he knew something was wrong.  He was two up at the time!

1-sun-mountain-raingearWhat happened thereafter was a waterproofing disaster of epic proportions.  The Team USA raingear supplier Sun Mountain should have done some research into wet valleys.

Meanwhile Europe’s players were snug as a bug in their ProQuip gear, so much so that they again have employed them for Medinah.  And the guys at ProQuip are not taking any chances.  Among the 400 items of raingear being shipped on a pallet to Chicago, the European Team have 90 pairs of waterproof trousers, 60 full-zip jackets and 60 half-zip playing tops for players, caddies and hanger-onners,

Queue 100 degree scorchers for all three days!

Michael Jordan was a legend on the basketball court, of that their can be no doubt.  Now golf fans at Medinah are again going to be treated to the sight of the former Chicago Bull as a fully fledged Team USA hanger-onner, er…advisor.  Apparently the way Air Jordan drives a golf buggy and chugs on a Cuban inspires guys like Furyk and Stricker to great things.

Davis Love confirmed that Jordan was being measured up for a suit, but sounded less than psyched at the news.   "Michael's going to be hanging around with Fred [Couples] probably a lot and be an influence," Love said.

Hang on there Davis, “hanging around”?  Do you mean “hanging around” like a bad smell or something else?

Love later elaborated on what Jordan can bring to the team.  “One of the neatest things I ever saw in the Ryder Cup was Michael riding in the golf cart with Tom Kite. He came out to watch Freddie and I play and I thought that was one of the coolest things.”

So there it is, he likes his driving!

Just when you think everything that can be possibly be logo’d as Team USA or Team Europe has been thought of, this latest one takes the biscuit. Now any player using True Temper shafts  (Dynamic Gold or Project X) can opt to have their reshafted in their team livery.

True Temper Sports in true “make a quick buck” marketing style are calling them “limited-edition shafts”. You can bet at least two things with this.

1. At most, only one player will opt to take out the perfectly good tuned shafts with which he makes a living week in week out, to replace them with a different shaft with a flag on it.  I’m thinking Poults. At best.

2. These limited edition shafts will be available all over the world.  The term limited will be used loosely, as in “the population of China is limited”.

What started out initially as an amicable conversation between Bo Van Pelt and legendary former Donegal League benchwarmer John Farren from Ballyliffin Golf Club quickly turned nasty after Farren revealed he couldn’t sort Van Pelt out for All Ireland Final tickets.

Bo Van Pelt is very proud of his Irish roots and the fact his first name means “cow” in the Gaelic language.  He’s also a huge fan of Gaelic Football and traces his ancestry back to the Van Pelts of Mayo who ruled the animal pelt business with an iron fist for centuries.  When Farren revealed he once wore the Donegal colours in a league match (though no actual proof of this exists), relations between the two quickly became icy.

donegal“I’ll never forget watching Willie Joe Padden and his bloodied headband against the Dubs, and Padraig Brogan’s goal was the best ever”, Van Pelt said, adding “John O’Leary had no chance, he couldn’t even save it on the way back out”.

After Farren refused Van Pelt two of his allocation of 1,500 Hogan Stand Upper tickets, the big hitting American declared “It’s war bitch, it’s war, I know the County secretary anyway” before storming off.

Where’s the nearest shopping mall car park to the Deutsche Bank? Coz that’s where you will find Ian Poulter with his new Ferrari tonight, impressing all his boy racer pals with his doughnuts and massive sub woofer.

Poults recently joined hopping mad Gordon Ramsay as the owner of a new customized Ferrari FF.  And he has been to the Ferrari factory to make his jammer as unique as it gets.

poults picking his curtains  The whole Ferrari Poulter love-in is the result of a collaboration with Cobra Puma Golf in the design of the Ferrari Golf Collection Driver.  So if you if you can’t afford the quarter-million dollar price tag for a car, you can at least splash out a paltry $2,000 for the driver.

“Choosing the curtains was the hardest part” -Ian Poulter

ferrari-driverThe Ferrari red and black driver is really Cobra’s ZL with a spray job and some panel beating but when would that ever stop a Ferrari fan.  Poults was spotted on the range recently testing five of them; you just knew one was not going to be enough!

fernandoThere’s also a Ferrari bag for company director’s wives which runs even more at $2,400. It’s made from the leather used in the Ferrari GT seats. Expect $120 polo shirts, $250 jackets and $600 shoes all with the Cobra/Puma/Ferrari livery next season too.

puma-ferrari It’s thought the whole arrangement comes as a result of Pumas sponsorship involvement with the Ferrari Formula 1 team and their head driver Fernando Alonso. Formula 1 is huge worldwide and the arrangement is set to have the tills ringing even louder.  After all Ferrari and Puma have worked successfully together before on a project. In 2009 the PUMA v1.815 i FG Ferrari i football boot was released.  It cost $350 and the limited edition of 815 pairs sold out immediately!

Davis Love the three hundred and thirty third must not have watched Rickie Fowler in the singles at Celtic Manor because he bypassed him and the WGC Accenture Matchplay champion Hunter Mahan for this years USA team.

Love went instead for Jim “five hour” Furyk, Steve Stricker, Dustin Johnson and Brandt Snedeker as his picks.  Despite having more Ryder Cup losses (15) than Johnson and Snedeker have had matches, Jim Furyk got the nod.  It’s thought the likelyhood of matches being completed in under 5 hours swung it in his favour.

Snedeker snuck in with his a runner-up at The Barclays and a sixth-place at The Deutsche Bank.

European Team Captain Jose Maria Olazabal was unavailable for comment today.  Apparently he decided to throw a massive impromptu party for some strange reason after hearing the US Team news.

Dustin Johnson 14/1

dustin-johnson Great strides are being made by big DJ recently.  I’m going to reinvest my winnings from his tied fourth at last week’s Deutsche Bank into him again this week at Crooked Stick.  That’s a third and a fourth so far in the playoffs for Dustin and he won the BMW Championship two years ago when held at Cog Hill.  Already a winner this year at the St Jude Classic and looking primed for Ryder Cup action.

Adam Scott 20/1

kate-hudson-adam-scott-hawaii-07 Scotty followed a pretty non descript performance at the Barclays with an excellent tied seventh last week powering home in 66 blows.  It has been a year of close shaves for Scott whose performances I believe have deserved better. Talks of an implosion at The Open were harsh in my view and what better way to hit back at your critics than to grab a big win here.

Sergio Garcia 20/1

sergio Sergio returns from a week off (chasing Daniela Hantuchkova’s tail at the US Open tennis) and it will be interesting to see if he can keep his current run of form going.  He wanted to rest before the run-in to the Ryder Cup this year and maybe that’s wise considering his near exhaustion by the time the final day singles came around in his last few appearances. Happy memories of his Wyndham win and third at The Barclays should put him right in the hunt again this week.

Jeff Overton 70/1

Overton funny[6] For me Overton was the USA’s man of the matches at Celtic Manor and he comes off a big reversal of form from The Barclays to notch a tied seventh at last weeks Deutsche Bank.  That may have been only Jeff’s third top-10 of the season but with this event coming to his home state of Indiana this week, he may just be inspired to great things from great odds of 70/1.

Kevin Stadler  90/1

Walrus Face My long odds shot this week is Kevin Stadler.  The junior walrus has tied for tenth in both playoff events so far and look for odds of around 9/1 for him to finish in the top-10 again this week.  A best this season of fourth at the RBC Heritage.
