Why didn't we realize this all along? Fowler, Kaymer, Garcia, Donald and co might have had an ulterior motive for travelling to Royal County Down this week; it's the perfect US Open preparation.

Phil Mickelson confirmed as much after he played Chambers Bay yesterday. Lefty spent four hours out on the front nine with Bones and short game expert Dave Pelz. Afterwards he told local reporters the course was "interesting" and very similar to British and Irish links courses.

Just another reason to keep a close eye on the Irish Open at the high tariff Royal County Down this weekend.
