The news that Sergio Garcia has not entered next week's DP World Tour Championship will be a big blow to the European Tour, yet there's something quite refreshing about his turning down a potentially massive payday at the limited field finale.

After a super(-ish barring the 72nd hole at the) BMW Masters and with the Spaniard's game in top shape it seems strange that he would choose to miss the flagship Dubai tournament.

It is the second time in three years that Sergio will skip the showdown at the Earth Course.  He ruled himself out in 2013 by not playing the required events in the first European Tour’s Final Series. Though his management gave no explanation for his absence, it may well be that Garcia just hates the place.

But even that theory doesn't hold much water. Garcia has played five Dubai World Championship's and has never finished worse than 21st. He tied 12th in 214 after recovering well from a first round of 73.

While Keith Pelley and the European Tour and Darren Clarke with the Ryder Cup on the horizon might be annoyed at Garcia, one man who will be very happy is the 61st-ranked player in the order of merit after the BMW Masters. He will be jumped to 60th and take Garcia's place in the Final. That looks like being Stephen Gallacher.

Or maybe Sergio just wants a break from this nightmare of a game! This is how he signed off at the BMW Masters. Ouch!

Ouch Sergio. Pressure?
