Very sad news for New Zealand after it's top Olympic gold medal prospect pulls out.

The country of New Zealand this morning announced three days of National Mourning following the shocking news that one of their best gold medal prospects, Stevie Williams, has pulled out of the upcoming Rio Olympic Games.

Prime Minister John Key announced that all rugby training, rugby coaching, under 12's, under 14's and under 16's rugby blitzes, rugby analysis and protein fuelling would be cancelled until Friday as a mark of respect.

No explanation has been given for the Williams withdrawal but the timing of the announcement, minutes after Australian Adam Scott also withdrew from the Games, is said to be significant.

"I'm gutted for Stevie," Key said. "I know how hard he's been training over the past four years to bring New Zealand it's first medal in like forever.  As always, it's all bloody Australia's fault."

More as it emerges.
