Darren Clarke is set to make his three wildcard picks at European Tour HQ later but not before the bookies had a lot of fun taking peoples money by forwarding a theory that Luke Donald and not Russell Know or Thomas Pieters would be picked.

According to William Hill this is not a scam and that their suspicions were aroused after hundreds of small bets were placed in the north of England sending Donald's odds from 7/1 yesterday morning to evens.

“They were only small bets, the biggest of which was I think 200 pounds,” a spokesman for William Hill said. “They were only small bets but they were of the frequency on a special market like that that you wouldn’t necessarily see on a special market and thus somebody had an inkling that something was going to happen.”

The public betfair market however paints a completely different picture and seems convinced that the in form Thomas Pieters is to join certainties Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer on the team.  They have the Belgian at evens with Knox and Donald at 4's and 5's.

As for William Hill they say they have "suspended" the betting on the market.

“By the time we suspended betting, Donald was six to four, he was still the fourth favourite,” the spokesman said. “But if we would have taken in any more bets the liability would have been such that we would have been in not a precarious position but a position that we wouldn’t have liked to have been on in such a specialist market.”

All will be revealed later on.
