I'm not a journalist but am in awe of Paul Kimmage. The way he stood up to Lance Armstrong, the fact that he was an elite sportsman himself and just this ability to cut through the facade to lay bare the facts in his work.  I was across from him in a media tent at the Irish Open a few years ago but was so afraid of him I didn't have the courage to say hello!

Rory McIlroy Paul Kimmage Interview
Paul Kimmage's interview with Rory McIlroy goes down as the best one yet. And there's more to come.

Yesterday he published an interview with Rory McIlroy in the Irish Independant and I finally got a chance to read it in depth this morning. If you really want to know Rory, you need to read it.

Kimmage works quick to get Rory's trust by cleverly referring to journalists as "they" several times in relation to Rory's "Grow the game" foot in mouth moment and the Olympics debacle. And with that out of the way, the interview takes off.

Here's the link.

I won't spoil the piece but my favourite bit was on Tiger Woods!

RM: I’m drawn to him, yeah. He’s an intriguing character because you could spend two hours in his company and see four different sides to him. When he’s comfortable and he trusts you — and his trust (sensitivity) is way (higher) than mine — he’s great. He’s thoughtful. He’s smart. He reads. He can’t sleep so that’s all he does — he reads stuff and educates himself on everything. But he struggles to sleep, which I think is an effect of overtraining, so I tell him to calm down sometimes. He’d be texting me at four o’clock in the morning: ‘Up lifting. What are you doing?’

PK: Really?

RM: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
