Rory McIlroy has sensationally announced today that he is to take a break from competitive golf to serve in the Northern Army.  The Northern Irishman and Game Of Thrones superfan told reporters he needs a break from the game to play his part in the impending Great War of the Seven Kingdoms.

McIlroy on his way to Winterfell today.
"Look I could tell you it's my ribs, or the ball, or that I've got the Zika virus but the truth is I need to put 100% focus into the threat north of The Wall," McIlroy told the assembled press in Florida today. "I know people are unhappy that I might not take part in the Fed Ex Cup playoffs or the Race To Dubai final series but all those events will count for nout if the White Walkers and the Army of the Dead invade and destroy us all."

McIlroy is expected to ride out to Winterfell later today to take part in an exhibition match to raise funds to buy wheat for the Northern Armies.

Responding to being informed there are actually only two episodes left in Game Of Thrones Season 7 with the final episode to be aired on August 27th, leaving him time to play in the second event of The Playoffs, The Dell Technologies Championship, Rory said  "Nothing f*cks you harder than time. The Great War is coming."

More as it emerges.
