Brian Keogh Tackles “The C Word”
Ireland’s top golf journalist Brian Keogh tackles the subject of cheating on the Irish Golf Desk site today. Click here for full article
If a tree falls in a forest and no one is
around to hear it, does it make a sound?” Or put it another way. If a golfer cheats but no-one dares to challenge him, is there a cheating problem in golf?
The official answer, apparently, is no. But that’s not what the grassroots are saying. For example, if a player cheats in a club competition, gets caught and sanctioned by his club but is not officially reported to the Provincial Branch or the Golfing Union of Ireland, he will only be out of action for as long as his club sees fit. Or as long as it suits his club to be without his talents.

Golf Channel Announce Next Haney Project with Brian Cowen!
After the abject failure of the last few Haney Projects stateside the Golf Channel have today announced it’s bringing the series to Europe. First up for some tuition is ex-Irish Taoiseach Brian Cowen. “I’d really like to get the ball going forward” said Brian before adding “my problem is achieving a good trajectory in the current climate”.
Shooting got underway today in Edenderry, and after attempting to drive the short par four first, Mr Cowen found his ball badly plugged in the rough just short of the green. Being as it was the first day of practice Haney offered to remove the buried ball, but Cowen steadfastly refused a dig out, preferring to embark on a series of negotiations with the ball in an effort to agree a fiscal stimulus package to get it to move.
Commenting on the progress of the first day Hank Haney told reporters “This is going to be tough but I believe Brian is already a billion times better than when we started this morning.”

Tiger’s Mind Was Elsewhere During Final Round- Partner
According to playing partner and PGA Tour rookie Brendan Steele, Tiger Woods gave up during the final round of the Famers Insurance Open. Steele told SI "I don't think he gave it everything today, once it started going in the wrong direction, I don’t think it had his full attention."
Paired together in the final round Steele shot a 2-under 70, and Woods 75 to tie for 44th. It was Woods' worst ever finish at Torrey.
So just what was on Tiger’s mind? We let the art department have a go! And reckon the results might not be that far off the mark…
Brand New Titleist Pro V1 Wins First Week Out
The 2011 model of the Titleist Pro V1x ball claimed a win out of the blocks with Bubba Watson in the Farmers Insurance Open Sunday. According to Bubbaclaus "It has a little bit higher ball flight, but with the same distance and same spin. I want it to go higher, you want it to be softer on the greens with these new grooves and the way it's been landing on some of these firm greens it's been able to stop a little quicker."
According to the men in white coats in Titleist, the new Pro V1 has more spin with little or no loss of distance, while the Pro V1x offers less spin off the driver and long irons for increased distance. Part of that is due to changes in the dimple patterns on the ball cover and part the increase in spin on the Pro V1 comes from an improvement in the way the cores are manufactured, called ZG process core technology.
Out of 156 players at the Farmers Insurance Open here's the Ball Count:
1. Titleist (102)
2. TaylorMade (15)
3. Callaway (13)

Robert Karlsson 15/1
The defending champion this week, Karlsson warmed up last week in Bahrain in some style. Four rounds in the 60’s, including a closing 66 gave him a fifth place finish on his maiden outing of 2011. The Swede won in some style last year with precision approach play and an obedient putter giving him a three stroke victory. Sure to contend again this time around though it wont be easy with the top two players in the world in the field along with the likes of Paul Casey and guesting Steve Stricker.
Pic: Karlsson “I must break you.”
Miguel Angel Jimenez 22/1
For those who didn’t catch last week’s event in Bahrain, Paul Casey won but was gifted the tournament by Miguel Angel Jimenez who missed putt after putt during the final round. Maybe his struggles were justified after Ian Poulter called the greens in Bahrain “the worst I’ve ever seen” and “embarrassing”. This week in Qatar the greens will be perfect and if Jimenez can reproduce that same brilliant iron play and find his form on the short stuff he could easily go one better.
Alvaro Quiros 15/1
Alvaro top tenned last week closing with an excellent 67 in Bahrain. The Spaniard won in Qatar in 2009 beating Louis Oosthuizen and Henrik Stenson by three shots. He also mounted a spirited defence last year and put on a final round putting masterclass to finish second behind Karlsson. His final round putt on the ninth then was one of the finest I’ve ever seen held.
Henrik Stenson 32/1
Where the hell has Henrik Stenson been? Well after finishing third at the British Open in St Andrews, the Swede embarked on a seven tournament US odyssey which was frankly, a failure. His first start of 2011 was in Abu Dhabi where he went largely under the radar down in 44th. However irrespective of form the Doha course has always been kind to Stenson since winning here in 2006. He top tenned the following year and finished second in 2008 and 2009 (tied). This will be Stenson’s 200th start so keep an eye out for a decent finish at good odds.
Brett Rumford 65/1
Our long odds each way shot this week is Aussie Brett Rumford. The former Irish Open winner played really well here last year finishing tied third with Lee Westwood. That was even more impressive given that Rumford shot a third round 73. The greens in Doha seem to suit Rumford’s long putter and though not a prolific winner (though he has won three times in Europe) he does tend to come into a place on good greens with three top threes last season. Reasonable squeak at long odds.

Ladies I’m Not Responsible For This Photo!
Okay so I was away at the PGA show in Orlando for the week and when I returned my inbox was full of this photo. Apparently something happened with Andy Gray in Sky Sports. I’m pleading ignorance but I think the photo gives it away.
Shot Of The Weekend: Phil Mickelson Has Pin Tended For Career Pitch Attempt
With Bubba Watson leading and Phil Mickelson needing to hole out his third shot over water on the final hole, Phil scoped the green and then sent caddy Bones forward to tend the pin. His incredible pitch landed just a foot left of the flag but failed to spin in. What an effort, what a shot. Our shot of the weekend.
