David Howell Reckons Table Tennis Has Him Atop Leaderboard
David Howell is in the clubhouse at 11 under after the third round of the Irish Open. Afterwards he told me that he has spent the evenings this week playing table tennis. He has been his mate Kevin “a thumping” and reckons “every little win is good for the confidence!”
He also said he has been working with a new coach for the past couple of weeks but wont say who it is until he wins tomorrow!

St. Margaret's John Kelly Makes The Cut At The 2011 Irish Open
GolfCentralDaily’s resident youtube phenomenon and St Margarets pro John Kelly has outdone the likes of Padraig Harrington and Darren Clarke by making the cut at the Irish Open.
Despite getting a freak flier on 17 that lead to bogey, John played the last brilliantly, just missing a ten footer for birdie. His tap in par meant he made the cut on one under. Afterward he thanked fellow pro and 17 time Irish Open player Brendan McGovern for his help on the bag. All the best John at the weekend!

Paul Cutler Hits 17 of 18 Greens and Sails To Six Under In Killarney
Just got off the course after following Paul Cutler down the back nine in Killarney. Massive birdie on 16 after laying up to get to five under. Great course management on 17 for a tidy par (nice work Mark Hemphill). Hybrid off the tee on the last into the wind left 220 yards. Another hybrid into five feet and canned the putt for birdie. In the clubhouse at six under!
All the journo’s were waiting on the 18th to chat to him. Tim Barter and Sky Sports too. Great stuff Cutso. Best of luck the weekend!

Garda Nigel Shevlin Gets Bullet Proof Vest For McIlroy Group!
Garda Nigel Shevlin got the plum post on day one of the 2011 Irish Open accompanying the group including reigning US Open Champion Rory McIlroy and defending champion Ross Fisher.
Commenting on his luck Shevlin laughed “There were a lot of knives aiming for my back when they allocated me the McIlroy group!”
When I suggested that was why he was wearing a bullet proof vest he replied that these were standard Garda issue nowadays when standing in the line of a McIlroy drive!

2011 Irish Open Best Dressed Player Award Goes To………
I know its not my place to be looking at what blokes are wearing but the Irish Examiner asked to do it for the fun so I took to the putting green with my Bruno fashion hat on. It was a close contest but best dressed on the day goes to Welshman and European Tour cash machine Jamie Donaldson. Nice work JD!
2011 Irish Open Practice Ground News
The common consensus from around the course today is that Darren Clarke (25/1) is in serious form. He has been in Killarney since Sunday and was working on the range yesterday with Pete Cowan for hours! In great form during his press conference Big D then hit every green in regulation in the Pro-Am.
Word on the practice ground is that Mark Foster (50/1) is hitting the ball really nicely and could have a good week. Locally there is huge interest in Michael Collins from Mallow and David Higgins from Waterville.
There’s talk to that Ross Fisher (22/1) could have a big say in proceedings this week even though the formline doesn’t make super reading. I watched him on the range and he’s hitting it sweet. He says himself he played great around Wentworth last week in practice and we all know how tough Wentworth now is. We also know that games with mates dont count but dont say I didn’t mention it if he defends on Sunday.
Personally I will be following John Kelly. With fellow pro and steadying influence Brendan McGovern on the bag the boys will get on great. JK wont be happy with anything short of making the cut. Good luck lads!

Robert Rock 40/1
Surely the Irish Open owes Robert Rock a win. The Belfry pro bagged all the cash but not the win when Shane Lowry pipped him in a playoff in Baltray two years back and last year he suffered more heartbreak when disqualified after the first round. To add insult to injury Rock had just shot a first round 65 to co lead the event. Finally got his first win at the BMW Italian Open in June and made a big splash at Congressional contending at the US Open having arrived just hours before it started.
Richard Green 28/1
Last year when he finished tied fifth Richard Green described the Killeen Course in Killarney as very similar to the one he grew up on in Killarney. Not the longest hitter on Tour, Green will enjoy the shorter test this week where shot shaping and good putting are rewarded. Winner of last years Portugal Masters on the short but tricky Villamoura layout, Green has been solid of late with top 15’s in Munich and France and tied 16th at The Open.
Padraig Harrington 18/1
Those lucky enough to follow Padraig Harrington last year will have witnessed a short game exhibition from the three time Major Champion. The fact that he came second, just two shots behind Ross Fisher having it only 47% of the fairways proves this. Forget his formline so far this year, Padraig Harrington will be up to reproduce his 2007 win. With the rough up, he’ll really need to be straight off the tee.
Joost Luiten 33/1
A decent long odds each way shout this week might Joost Luiten. The Dutchman’s top 10 last year was all the more impressive considering his opening round of 74. He hasn’t been in good form of late with missed cuts in France and Scotland followed by a poor Open Championship but I saw enough in his tied third at the BMW in Munich and tied fifth at the Italian Open in June to believe he can contend this week.
Richard Finch 50/1
Former Irish Open champion Richard Finch will quietly fancy his chances this week and why shouldn’t he? Though he drove it on average 25 yards shorter than winner Alex Noren in Sweden last week, Finch was the straightest driver and best putter in the field. A reproduction of those two stats in Killarney are sure to sure to yield even greater success than his second last week. Finch was the only player in the field to be under par in the final round last Sunday.
