In advance of the publication of Hank Haney’s book about Tiger Woods entitled The Big Miss, more leaks have emerged in The New York Times.

  • The big reveal is that the suggestion that Tiger Woods was interested in becoming a Navy SEAL was serious.  So serious in fact that it was SEAL training and not golf that caused Woods to tear the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee. He was involved in an exercise with the SEALs when the injury occurred.
  • Haney also says in the book that Tiger has a fixation with body builders saying that he is  "inordinately interested in muscle-building."
  • Haney has a whole chapter in the book about Tiger’s indiscretions.  It details Tigers obsession with calling and texting women on his mobile phone, whilst practicing his Haney.
  • Whether it matters or not, Tiger doesnt share his lollipops.  He often went into his house to grab, yet never offered one to Haney.  He said they were sugar free but was there something else in there he felt Haney shouldn’t be tasting??

It’s with great sadness I sit here and write my thoughts on the passing of my friend, Connor Mallon.  We had to go as far as America to meet up and have the craic, but spoke on the phone regularly and took the mick out of each other on facebook the rest of the time.  I bet Connor had a lot of friends. Every one with a story.connor

We spoke on the phone just two weeks ago about doing  a series of pro tips on how to play links courses.  Connor could play links courses. He could play any course. “Be great for the yanks!”, he said.

We were to film at his course Narin and Portnoo in April but on Connor’s insistence we were going to hop in the car and travel to Ballyliffin and then to Rossapenna and then a few others “just to give everyone in the NorthWest a bit of coverage”.  Make a trip out of it, meet everyone, do it right.  That’s the kind man he was.

connor1 Everyone will have their stories about Connor.  He was the friendliest, most animated character you could ever meet.  People gravitated towards him.  I’ve played in big sporting events in my life and met famous people yet cant remember the details of any of them.  I can remember every minute I spent in Connor Mallon’s company.

Pic: Trying on “the wearable condom” on the Cross clothing stand for a laugh!

The last time we met up was in Orlando for the PGA Show in January.  A bunch of us went downtown to see the Orlando Magic play the visiting Boston Celtics in an NBA game.  Mick Walsh and myself had tickets up in the rafters and one for Connor. He gave his ticket to someone who was stuck.  Typical!  “I’ll follow yez in lads!”  Ten minutes into the game, he makes his way up to the seats, takes one look at how bloody high up they are and says “who wants food?”

We didn’t see Connor again until after the game in a pub across the road.  He arrived in with Justin Farrell and a big smile on his face brandishing a picture on his phone.  “Where the f*ck were you boss?” we said.

“Take a look at this boys” he boomed swinging his phone so we could see the image. The picture showed Connor, on the court at The Amway arena, his arm around a Boston Celtics player like he knew him all his life! Now I know what you’re thinking; how did he manage to get past mega security, sit in $2000 courtside seats and walk onto the court of an NBA game and convince Kevin Garnett to pose for a picture?

connor2 The answer is because Connor Mallon was a Character.

That night we sung songs.  Mick and Doc from Mayo, Johnny Farren and Connor from Donegal.  Sang them in the pub, sang them on the street, sang them in the club, even sang them in the taxi.  Connor and his three backing vocalists in the back drove that Indian taxi lad mad with Whiskey and Rye, but by Jesus he paid him well for his trouble.

Pic: Two boys with the gift of the gab!

Connor Mallon.  A father, a husband, a golfer, a friend…….and a Character.  I bet Connor had a lot of friends. Every one with a story. RIP.

It’s all right folks.  Just days after Tiger’s OJ Simpsonesque slow car chase out of Doral, the Wooden One has resurfaced on American TV.  There may be have been weeping and gnashing of teeth among the Tiger fans last week but as it turns out Woods Achilles Heel isn’t actually his Achilles Heel.

On Good Morning America he told the presenter Robin Roberts "I'll be there. Don't worry about it.  I took a few days off. I'll start hitting balls tomorrow. The stiffness is gone. Hopefully, I'll be ready next week."

They then played a hole on Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13.  After Woods took four on a par—3, Roberts was left a tap in for par saying “All I need is to make this to once again beat Tiger Woods”.  And she did!  Here’s the video.

shotlink Here’s a few key stats to help you pick the winners this week at The Transitions and Andalucia Open.

The Transitions

  • Copperhead is a par 71 (36,35) with four par 5’s and five par 3’s. Measures 7,340 yards.
  • The par 4 16th is the most difficult hole on the course statistically.
  • Holes 16-18 are known as the “snake pit” and rank collectively as the seventh toughest stretch on the Tour roster.
  • Putting is the key stat.  Last years winner Gary Woodland ranked third for the week at 2.009.
  • Copperhead Course at Innisbrook Resort is suited to short hitter. The average driving distance on shotlink in 2011 was 277.6 yards, making it one of the five most suited courses for shorter hitters on the PGA Tour.
  • In the last three stagings, The Transitions average winning score was 12 under par.
  • 15 Under par won last year.  Scoring is expected to be even better this year.  The forecast is for perfect weather, very little wind and the rough is cut shorter than 2011.

  • After stagings in Malaga and Seville, the event moves back to the Aloha Club this year.
  • Aloha last staged the event in 2007 and 2008.
  • The course is a par 72 measuring 6881 yards for members.
  • Dry weather in the region has meant the rough is not at all punishing.
  • In 2007 the winning score was 20 under, it was 16 under in 2008.
  • Accuracy off the tee is the key to the course statistically with the last two winners at Aloha (Westwood, Levet) featuring in the top five statistically.

rory mcilroy funny[5][4]Rory McIlroy might not be swinging a club in competition again until The Masters but he’s busy busy busy ironing his tuxedo before a trip to the White House for a meeting with Barack Obama.  I know what you are thinking.  St Patrick’s Day is coming and Rory has been drafted in for the annual back slapping fest complete with over-the-top bowl of shamrock.

But no!  Rors is actually heading there tonight as part of a blacktie event to honour British PM David Cameron. McIlroy will be joined by other famous British figures, sportsmen and actors for the formal State dinner.

In a statement released by Irish Premier Enda Kenny last night he said “Damn, I should have thought of that. When is St. Patrick’s Day again?”

After tonight's dinner McIlroy heads back to his home in Jupiter Florida where he will practice at The Bear’s Club in the lead up to the Masters.  I have it on good authority though that Rors will raise a pint to St. Patrick on Saturday night.

Here’s a great video from golfing world of the top 10 golfing tantrums.

I was chatting to Lynn McCool from Lough Erne last week and she told me about their Friends Of Lough Erne fourball offer.  You’ll get tea/coffee and a bacon butty before you go out, all for €50, based on a fourball.  To book call the office on 028 66345766 or if calling from the Republic 048 66345766 and say you heard about it on golfcentraldaily.  The offer ends at the end of April.

Transitions Championship, Innisbrook Resort - Copperhead, Palm Harbor, Florida. Defending: Gary Woodland
Winner alright: Last week we previewed Charl Schwartzel who tied fourth from 34/1

John Senden 46/1

john_senden_729-420x0 Arguably one of the the players of the tournament at last weeks WGC Cadillac.  Followed a first round 76 with 67, 68 and a final round 65 to tie for sixth.  That’s the second top 10 of the season for the big Aussie, third if you count the matchplay. Tied for second here twice in 2007 and 2008 and tied 15th last season.  Real chances of a top five.

Webb Simpson 22/1

homer-simpson-297x300 Starts his 100th Tour event this week and will be looking to add to his two wins last year at The Wyndham and Deutsche Bank. Third in Hawaii back in January and a top 10 in Phoenix, Simpson has yet to fire for all four days at a tournament.  Mixed the sublime with the ridiculous last week at Doral where a pair of 66’s were sandwiched in between a 75 and 77.  Did enough though to impress me though, even if paired with sideshow Woods in the final round.

Nick Watney 27/1

0703watneyW-300x394 May have been weighed down with expectation last week at the WGC as defending champion and can approach this one a bit looser and more gung ho for the challenge. This will be Nick’s seventh event at Innisbrook and he’s been in top 15 in the last three. A best finish of fourth in 2010 when Jim Furyk won.

Jonathan Byrd 55/1

byrd This will be Byrd’s tenth start at Palm Harbour and he’s never missed a cut.  His best finish here is fourth in 2006 when the then Chrysler Championship used be staged in late October.  A good solid campaigner with top 10’s this season at the Tournament of Champions and at the Northern Trust Open.  Should be available at around 6/1 “to finish in the top 10”.

Best Of The Rest

luke If short odds dont put you off there were signs that Luke Donald 12.5/1 was returning to his old self last week at Doral where he tied for sixth.  Donald didn’t play here last year and indeed has only played twice at Innisbrook in 2010 and 2003.  His last visit saw him tie for sixth.  Those looking to take a punt on a form horse should look at Charl Schwartzel 17/1.  Two top fives in his last two events and yet couldn’t buy a put last weekend at Doral.  A word of warning though on Sxhwartzel, he may the form horse but he’s never even been to the track before!

See my

Marcel Siem 34/1

siem-marcel-kopfhoerer Started this season where he finished the last, in great form. In four starts in the east and India Siem has bettered his result each time. Fourth at the Dubai Desert Classic was followed by a tied second at the Avantha Masters when Jbe Kruger won. Siem tied for 12th last time the event was staged at Aloha in 2008. He battled his drving that week but putted excellently.

Jose Manuel Lara 60/1

lara For the second year in a row Lara travelled to Mexico to play in the Mayakoba Classic. It didn’t go as well this year as last, missing the cut after a first round 77. I think however Lara will return refreshed and one of the leading home contenders this week. Great tied fourth at the Avantha Masters after a bad first round. This week last year the Tour was in Sicily where Jose came third so on that evidence there might be some value in him this week.

Gonzalo Castano 27/1 (Non Runner)

gonzo[3] Great see Gonzo getting his place in the WGC events lately, he even took Tiger on in the matchplay. If jet lag is not a factor the Spaniard might take comfort back on home ground this week. Knows the course well and was in contention here in 2007 when Lee Westwood won. It’s all about the putter for Gonzo, tee to green he’s rock solid.

Marcus Fraser 42/1

marcus fraser[4] Another man jetting in from Miami this week is Marcus Fraser. He struggled to 76 in the first round at Doral but then shot three tidy rounds in the 60’s for a top 25 finish. Fourth in India before that and one to watch this week.

Best Of The Rest

Of the favourites it looks like the best value there is for Joost Luiten at 34/1. However if you’re looking for some long odds glory this week there’s Swede Michael Jonzon in the field at 300/1 on betfair. He is something of a course specialist at Aloha having finished fourth in 2007 and tied sixth in 2008. I’ll also be keeping an eye on the progress of young Swede Joel Sjoholm who tees it up for the 47th time on Tour this week and represents great value at 85/1.

Standing on the par three15th tee Paul Casey agreed with caddie Craig Connelly if he got a hole in one he would split the prize, a Cadillac parked feet away, with him. They even shook hands to rubber stamp the bet.

After Casey’s ball went in tot he hole Connelly started laughing manically, practically climbing up on his boss with happiness.

As they walked off the tee, Casey asked a Marshall about the prize and was told the car was actually the prize on the 13th hole and not the 15th.  Connelly’s face goes from sheer joy to utter dejection while Casey gets the last laugh.  Here’s the video.

Bet you were wondering why all the TaylorMade staffers were wearing “17” hats at the WGC Cadillac Championship.  Its actually a marketing campaign to highlight the RocketBallz fairway woods .  TaylorMade claim the 3-wood can increase a golfer's distance by 17 yards, hence the big green 17 on the hats.

Gerry Dulac of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette caught up with  Tom Olsavsky, TaylorMade's senior director of product creation who said

"We're advertising 17 yards because legally that's all we're allowed to advertise, but most times when we've done 1-on-1 [testing], it's been 20 to 26 yards. When we tested it during our demo day in Orlando [at the PGA Merchandise Show], the average was 28.6 yards longer. We've never had a jump like that. Never."

The real difference with the RBZ fairways is the COR, or coefficient of restitution, or trampoline effect of the ball off the clubface.  The legal limit is 0.830 but fairway woods by design usually only get to approx 0.780.  Until the RBZ fairway which clocks in at 0.810.  That helps the ball come off the face faster with less backspin.  It all means more distance!

High ranking cardinals from Rome have been dispatched by private jet to Florida today to investigate claims of a Jesus sighting during the WGC Cadillac Championship at Doral.

41691990_cardinals_ap416 According to Papal envoy Cardinal Francesco Totti “All claims of seeing the Son of God must be investigated thoroughly. Especially with the strength of the euro currency against the dollar and the abundance of strip clubs in the greater Miami area.  Pope Benedict needs 400 Marlboro Lights too, not the long ones, so it all ties in nicely”.

The sighting in question was reported by a cameraman operating from a crane high above the Blue Monster Course  where the tournament is being played.  Al “Jumbo” Trontowsky, 48, recounted the events leading up to his seeing the young Nazarene carpenter and one third of the Holy Trinity; “I had the camera trained on Dustin Johnson’s caddie kneading something in his pocket because that’s what the network likes me to do, when I got a message in my ear from the producer telling me to film Johnson’s drive.  After the ball was hit it was obvious it was headed straight for me.  I felt a cold chill and saw my life flash before my eyes, then a bearded man, about 32 years old with an unkempt brown beard, with kind eyes and outstretched arms beckoning me towards him.  Then I blacked out.”

buddy_jesus-300x300Vatican officials are expected to interview Trontowsky later today.  “I’m looking forward to chatting to Mr Jumbo” said Cardinal Totti adding “this could solve everything. Jesus disappeared a mere one thousand nine hundred and eighty odd years ago, still a young man, albeit with minor injuries.  We’ve always maintained he is out there somewhere and this could just be the lead we are after to gain the Catholic Church some respectability.”

In a completely unrelated incident former US Open Champion Lucas Glover was arrested near the course yesterday after he tried to scale a security fence and gain entry to the property. Glover dressed in a white robe and sandals, yelled Psalms as he was lead away.

What’s In The Bag: Phil Mickelson British Open Champion 2013

Here’s what’s in the bag of Phil Mickelson for 2012 as he heads into Major season.

johnparamor Top European Tour referee John Paramor took swift and decisive action last night, after walking his dogs and watching Barcelona, to strip Rory McIlroy of the point he won against Maria Sharapova. The controversial point was played out at the BNP Paribas International Showdown event at Madison Square Gardens on Monday night.

A vodka fuelled viewer from Sharapova’s home country of Russia emailed the European Tour after viewing the video on youtube, claiming that McIlroy’s first serve did not land inside the service line according to the International Tennis Federation rules, the world governing body on the game. Yevgany Bollockov, 46, pointed out that notwithstanding a clear foot fault, McIlroy’s underarm serve that landed near the baseline appeared to go unnoticed by respected Chair Umpire Carlos Bernardes.

rory-sharapova Paramor has been quick to respond, stripping McIlory of the point two days later and  ordering that it be replayed as a “second serve”. Furthermore Paramor issued a public warning to the Ulsterman for time wasting and not being attired according to Section 7-3 of the ITF code.

It is thought McIlroy will return to New York tonight after the first round of the WGC Cadillac Championship being staged in Florida to replay the point against Sharapova behind closed doors.

London— kids-at-school A survey of 100 five to seven year old children conducted at a primary school in London yesterday  concluded  that new World number one golfer Rory McIlroy has “funny hair”. A whopping 79% of the children described the young Northern Irishman’s thatch as being “kinda weird for a golfer”.  Spokesperson for the children Melissa Snotworthy, 6, said “Rory McIlroy wears a hat like Fireman Sam and the postman who calls in to give mammy a special hug every morning when daddy is gone to work.”

The teacher in charge of the classic Ms Sarah Granger, 27, say she “probably would, but would want the light off”, when asked about McIlroy.

In reaching the top of the world rankings McIlroy is not the first golfer to look a bit funny without his hat.  In a similar survey carried out in the USA in 2006, kids voted overwhelmingly that Tiger Woods had “mental fringe and a huge forehead”.  McIlroy does however become the hairiest golfer ever to top the rankings beating the 1986 Bernhard Langer mullet by a mere 2,000 follicles.  No bald golfer has ever been number in the world although many experts argue that both Vijay Singh and Tiger Woods had slight bald patches during their reign.

The forgotten man at the Honda Classic was 43 year old Tom Gillis who found himself sandwiched between Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods.  Gillis who has had more wrist injuries than Rory has had birthdays appeared to be using (dont laugh) graphite shafts.tom gillis

After a bit of digging I found that are indeed GAT grpahite iron shafts made by Graphite Design.  For Gillis, the shafts ease the feel of impact on the wrists whilst performing like a steel shaft.  Here are the :

GAT 115 Iron-
Kick Point: MID
Trajectory: MID
Ball Spin: LOW/MID
Swing Speed (All Flexes Range): 85-116+
Shaft Description: GAT 15 shafts maintain the overall weight and balance provided by steel shafts in irons.  These shafts provide the similar trajectory as the most popular steel shafts used by better players and professional golfers.

Added another tied fifth at the Honda to his fifth at the Volvo Golf Champions event in Fancourt back in January. His ball striking will be rewarded on some of the easiest greens on Tour this week. Solo second here in 2010 but don’t mention last year to Charl, he bombed out on the Saturday.

Tiger Woods 8/1

I hate tipping Tiger but Rory likely to start this event around 5/1 there seems to be a bit more value in Woods. Changed to his old Ping grip last weswood woodsweek and said it helped with his release. A final round of 62 on the tough Champions course last week showed that he’s getting to grips with his game again. Tied for tenth last year whilst struggling with his swing but won in Doral three years straight from 2005 to 2007, two of those coming before the event got WGC status.

Lee Westwood 15/1

Beginning to find his feet on the PGA Tour with a fourth place finish at the Honda to go with his fourth at the matchplay. The Americans do stats like no other and Lee pops up there third in greens in regulation, second in scrambling and second only to Rory in scoring average. It all suggests a win is coming and he wont get a better chance than on these super flat greens.

Hunter Mahan 34/1

hunter mahan funny[3]Rested and rejuvenated, the latest WGC winner will be itching to get back into competition this week. Gamed the new Ping Nome in the desert and expect to see him drain more putts this week. His ninth place finish here last year probably doesn’t reflect the performance, he lead after two rounds

Dustin Johnson 34/1

dustin-johnson-one-legged-squatGreat to see DJ returning to form after his surgery over the Winter. Top fives at his course Pebble Beach and at tough Riviera and a good run in the desert leave him primed for a tilt at the title this week. Dustin might feel The Blue Monster owes him one after finishing second last year two shots behind Nick Watney.

Best Of The Rest

Matt Kuchar 46/1 thought it best to take last week off after a poor Honda showing in 2011 and starts on his fifth PGA Tour event of the season this week. The long odds reflect Kuch’s recent form of mid table mediocrity but he had a good run at the WGC Accenture recently and is a big fan of The Blue Monster having tied third in 2010 and fifth last year. The key for Kuchar is driving accuracy; one good week off the tee and he will contend.
Scanning the odds on Betfair I see Fredrik Jacobson at 140/1. He finished 67, 69 to finish 16 at the Honda last week and I think he could reward a small each way investment at those odds.

Make sure you check out the golf channel’s new documentary series “Down The Stretch” where the leaders are mic’d up from dawn to dusk on final round Sunday.  Yesterday Rory McIlroy got the treatment on his way to winning the Honda Classic.  The show air in the US tonight at 11pm Eastern Time.  I will post a link or a torrent here if one becomes available.

harris englishHere’s what I know about the mystery man teeing it up with Rory McIlroy in the final round of the 2012 Honda Classic.

  1. English is not actually English. Born and reared in Georgia. That’s where Augusta is.
  2. He is a Bulldog. That’s a University of Georgia graduate. Of business no less!
  3. Aged 22, today he will meet Rory McIlroy for the first time.
  4. Won two Nationwide Tours events as an amateur in 2011 including the “Nationwide Children’s Hospital Invitational”.
  5. Played Walker Cup in 2011 winning his two singles matches against Andy Sullivan and James Byrne.
  6. Turned pro after the Walker Cup.
  7. Finished 13 at PGA Q school to get his card.

from Ron in Rory-Mcilroy-Look-Alike-1w-240x300 New Jersey- The mother of a 19 year boy has today started proceedings against golf giant Titleist after her son failed to break 100 in a municipal golf tournament.  Meredith Molasses (53) claims that having spent over $3000 on Titleist equipment for her son Tyler and bought him a Jumeirah hat, he failed to make her over $10 million dollars in earnings in the first 12 months.

Attorney for Mrs Molasses, Chuck Chumpa said in a statement yesterday, “ We are considering all our options now and things are looking good for a settlement.  When Tyler was given all the Titleist equipment we believed it would be a question of just going ron flashout there and winning a lot of money and getting a tennis player girlfriend.  When it didn’t happen, it soon become obvious that there something wrong with the equipment.  The young man is very upset. We’re going after Oakley next.  Tyler says that when he puts them on everything looks yellow.”

So the story goes, Rory was walking into the clubhouse at the Honda Classic and who was coming the other way only Jack Nicklaus.  Rory sticks out the hand but Jack breezes past.   Rors calls after him.

05-BearRors:  Hey Jack

Nicklaus: “Who is that? Who is that?”

Rors: “It’s me.”

Nicklaus: “Who?”

Rors: “Me.”

Nicklaus: “Who are you?”

Rors: “Rory.”

Nicklaus: “Oops sorry about that Rory, I haven’t got my glasses on. I thought you were Tiger Woods!”

woods_tigerTiger may not have wanted to talk about becoming a Navy Seal but one thing he did want to talk about was his putting.  During the first round of the Honda Tiger had his old Ping Grip on his Nike Method putter and spoke about his big effort on the practice green this week.

“I spent about almost four hours the other day putting, which was good, two different sessions, two with a meal in between,” Woods said. “I just worked on going back to my old basics with my dad, and some of the things that he taught me. When I looked at the tape, I got away from some of those things. My posture was off, the way the club was releasing was off. A lot of things were off. And I just had to start from the get go, just log in the reps, do my little tee drill that you see me do all the time, and I built it from there. It started coming back, the flow and the stroke, and started feeling very good.”

Tiger took 34 putts in round one despite hitting 15 greens in regulation.

critchley [4] Great to see that my website is being taken a serious platform for golf discussion and a bit of goading.  Yesterday my favourite Munster prop Ian Poulter used my “Bruce Critchley Claims GMac For England” YouTube video to taunt my favourite Ulster prop Graeme McDowell on the Twitter machine.

Below is the video in question and here is the link to a very serious article on Poults and Bruce Critchley talking “bollox”. that might add to the discussion!

ORLANDO—SeaWorld are today readying a 5 million gallon tank and a bucket of small fish in a bid to lure golfer Tiger Woods.  In a book released by Woods ex coach Hank Haney, it was revealed that the multiple Major champion never cared that much golf and secretly hid a deep desire to become a semi aquatic mammal from his Dad.pccaSanDiegoSeaWorldSealShowB4491

“It has always been Woods dream to be a seal”, said Haney adding “Tiger often talked about the thrill of performing five shows a day in front of adoring kids, slipping out of the pool on his belly to ring a bell and balancing a rubber ball on his nose.”

The expectant team at Sea World are  putting together a whole new production with Tiger Woods the seal as the main attraction.  Ex wife Elin Nordegren has also been approached regarding a re-enactment of the infamous incident of November 2009. “We think having Elin doing her clubbing thing with the seal would be a really nice fit and not at all cruel” said Sea World owner Chuck Fish.

Fish confirmed that the planned production would also feature ex golfer and Sea World favourite Craig Stadler who now works as a 400 pound Walrus at the iconic venue.  Since ending his career on the course, Stadler has established himself as a Walrus of world class at Busch Gardens with his amazing trick ‘I fart in your general direction’.

“There’s lots of work to do to make this happen” continued Fish, “If all the numbers work and we do get Woods into the tank, we will have to closely observe him for up to seven days to monitor signs of stress.  We will be looking closely at his flippers.  If he rolls onto his side, tilts his head, and waves his right flipper, then it would inhumane to continue.  Or if he spits at the staff.”

2012 Honda Classic Betting Preview and Tips

PGA National Champion Course · Palm Beach Gardens, Florida

Purse: $5.7 million Winning Share: $1,026,000 FedExCup Points: 500

Fredrik Jacobson 65/1

freddie jacobson funny pic[5] My “go to” man for tough courses and they don’t come much tougher than “The Bear Trap” on the Champions Course. Last season was great for Freddie in his painters cap. Remember his great third round at Congressional in the US Open and the fact he put aside a disappointing final round there to win The Travelers the following week. Finished last season in storming style and in his 2012 debut at tough Riviera a closing 67 bagged a creditable top 15 spot. Performed poorly last year here but has two top 10’s previous to that to give hope.

Keegan Bradley 30/1

maar01_keegan_bradley You have just gotta love the way Keegan Bradley handled the press last week when talking about his on course spitting. As honest as they come both on and off the course, I predict another good week for him in Florida. Okay he did bomb out here last year, but is a completely different player since as evidenced by his US PGA win in August. Ran Mickelson close on another tough track at Riviera a few weeks back in finishing second and hasn’t been outside the top 20 so far this season.

Mark Wilson 50/1

mark-wilson_t640 Very impressive at the matchplay last week winning the consolation match against Lee Westwood to finish third. Wilson won here in 2007, the first year the Champions Course at PGA National was used after a Jack Nicklaus revamp. A word of warning though, six rounds in the desert Sun plus all the media commitments at the WGC is bound to have taken some toll on 37 year old Wilson and stamina may be an issue. There’s no questioning his desire though having already bagged a win in 2012 at the Humana Challenge.

Graeme McDowell 46/1

separated at birth GMac yasser arrafat[3] Even though the field includes the likes of Rory McIlroy, Tiger Woods and Lee Westwood, I think there is a nice bit of value in Graeme McDowell this week. Bumped out of the matchplay in the first round last week, it wasn’t long before Gmac was posting up videos of himself and caddie Kenny playing in the dark back in Florida. The 2010 US Open Champion will be right at home on the Bermuda greens of the Florida swing and shot a super 64 in the final round last year to tie sixth. Third in both of the HSBC events either side of Christmas and definitely one to watch.

Best Of The Rest

Kyle Stanley 34/1 is having a super start to the season having come second at the Farmers and won in Phoenix a couple of weeks back. This was only Kyle’s fifth start on the PGA Tour last year and he actually lead at the halfway point before fading at the weekend. Of the new breed of muscle players Stanley is surprisingly accurate lying fifth in the Tour’s greens in regulation stats.

ben crane crazy legs crane funny pic[3] Ben Crane 38/1 is also one to watch. A top class putter, that talent will be called upon in the Bear Trap. A great man for self deprecation but there’s a serious side to Crane too with three top 10’s including that recent second in Phoenix.

If you’re looking for an each way bet or a “to finish in the top 10” chance then take a look at Robert Allenby. I have to admit he’s not my cup of tea and hasn’t won on the PGA Tour since 2011 but he’s a dogged campaigner and another of the 40 plus brigade. Lost a playoff in Mexico last week and having top fives in 2008 and 2009, a top 10 this week would not surprise.
