You mention The Open on BBC to any golf fan and they will inevitably say they love to hear the tones of dear old Peter Alliss in the commentary box.

But now it seems the R&A are close to agreeing a deal with Sky Sports which could  mean an end to the BBC's 60 year coverage on free to air TV.

What a pity. No more Alliss updates on the kids who operate the yellow scoreboard from Giggleswick College or a letter about dear old Maud in Woburn who is celebrating her 105th birthday. Not to mention Ken on the course!

The Open just wont be the same.
