Favourites Discussion

Bubba Watson 12/1 won here in 2010 and has three other top six finishes besides since 2008.  His form however since a solo third at Doral back in March has been poor by his standards and he missed the cut last week at the US Open.  Brandt Snedeker is next in the betting at 14/1.  He’s coming off a solo 8th at Chambers Bay, T6 at the Byron Nelson and T2 at the Colonial and has a recent best of T11 here in 2014.

Doc’s Top Five To Watch

Louis Oosthuizen 22/1

Had to withdraw from the Travelers last year due to injury but fit now and coming off a great T2 at the US Open where he birdied six of his last seven holes on Sunday.  Just the most elegant golf swing in the world, it’s no wonder that is best results this year have come on tough courses like Hilton Head, Augusta and Doral.  If he stays healthy Louis is well worth an each way look this week.

Billy Horschel 22/1

The Gator was snapping (well bitching really!) about the greens in Chambers Bay but he still managed to finish T25.  That is four top-25’s in a row now for Billy adding in The St Jude, The Memorial and The Players.  If you’re looking for a guy that will rain balls down on these greens in regulation and avoid the scrambling lottery it’s Billy.  Needs a good week with the putter.  T24 last year.

Tony Finau 40/1

Contrary to perception big hitters can do very well at TPC River Highlands because these greens are raised and tricky to hit with longer irons.  Tony Finau has been knocking on the door in recent weeks and this could be the kind of lower key event that could deliver his first podium or even win.  T14 again last week at the US Open to go with a T8 at The Memorial and T10 at the Byron Nelson.  In fact the Hawaiian has been top-20 in his last five and I’m betting he’ll be top-5 this week.

Marc Leishman 40/1

Missed the cut last week at the US Open but I saw enough in Marc’s T5 at Muirfield Village to give him the nod this week.  Knows how to get it done here having won in 2012 and had a good event last year also, finishing T11.

Russell Knox 40/1

Chose Russell as my fifth pick over Branden Grace because he’ll be rested, fresh and has three previous starts at The Travelers.  Coming off three straight top-25’s and improving each time with a T8 last time out at St Jude.  Another man who will hit lots of greens for you and play solid golf.  Best here of T13 in 2013, I think he’ll better that this week.

Long Odds Glory Shots (Over 100/1)

Seung Yul Noh 100/1 looks a value bet having arresting a run of missed cuts last time out with a T3 at the St Jude.  He topped the GIR stats there and if he had holed ANYTHING would have won.

Michael Thompson 125/1 will either miss the cut of do brilliantly this week because that’s how he rolls.  Also T3 at the St Jude but he did it with the putter.  Performed great at TPC River Highlands in 2011 when finishing solo 4th.  I’ll be having a tiny flutter at those odds.

Andres Romero 150/1 is for me the great mystery of the PGA Tour.  Six missed cuts from seven before the US Open and bingo, a T14 there.  T6 in 2011 and T24 in 2013, could be high on the leaderboard if he gets in the mood.  That is a big Andres IF though!
