Favourites Discussion

Martin Kaymer (10/1) is in the field this week but that wont take much focus off Bernd Wiesberger who looks good for the odds at around 12/1. The Austrian took last week off after a T4 on the links in Scotland and arrives in Vilamoura fresh and ready. Should have and could have won this tournament in 2012 (solo 4th) and 2013 (T3) and if it pleases the Golfing Gods, Bernd should be the man this week.

Doc’s Top Five To Watch

Chris Wood 20/1

Regular readers will know I put a lot of store in “par-4 scoring” as a form indicator and with Chris a healthy 12 under in that category over his last two events, he’s positively jumping off the page for a pick.  T9 in Woburn last week after a T4 at the Dunhill Links is all very positive stuff heading to Portugal where he scored a T7 in the truncated rain affected event last year.  Big chances for the big man. Lynny won here, so can Woody.

Tommy Fleetwood 25/1

Fourth visit to Portugal for Tommy and he’s bettered his finish every time culminating in a T12 last season.  Two T13’s in his last two starts could be compared to a steam train; slow to get going but building up huge momentum at the weekend.  Shot a 65 at Woburn on Sunday and finished the week T2 in greens hit in regulation.  If he puts himself in good position early on, this could be a very good week for Tommy.

Romain Wattel 45/1

The Victoria course can be a bitch if you hit shot and miss the fairways. I was impressed by Romain's long and straight driving at Woburn last week and if he brings that driving game to the Victoria course, can look forward to bettering that T22 finish.  Still not getting the results you might expect from a man of his talent but this week could change that. T4 in 2014.

Felipe Aguilar 80/1

Didn’t happen for Felipe in the British Masters but I’m going to stick with him one more week after a T13 in Scotland the week before.  Twice a T3 finisher in the last four stagings of the Portugal Masters, where he has given putting masterclasses.

Richard Bland 80/1

Played better than his T13 at Woburn suggests and was troubled with a back injury throughout.  With his 2016 card already secure this new confident Blandy wont get a track better suited to his game. T4 in 2014 and well capable of emulating that this time around.  Each way chances.
