Ed Sheeran has been given the final spot in the field for the 2017 Open Championship after Brandt Snedeker withdrew earlier today with a rib injury.

Fresh from his appearance in Game Of Thrones, Sheeran said he "more than happy to give golf a go" around Royal Birkdale as long as his new single could be plugged during ad breaks.

R&A Chief Martin Slumbers defended the decision to give the singer, and not another Touring Pro, the final Open spot.  "Look, he's in every blooming other thing on the TV anyway so we thought it was only right and proper to put him in the Open too," said Slumbers. "If he's good enough for Aria Stark and her many faces, then he's good enough for us."
