As always Mother Nature has her say in the golfing Majors and word from weather forecasters at Shinnecock Hills is that the early starters on Day 1 of the US Open will have a big advantage over those following in the afternoon.

Wednesday saw the course softened up by heavy rainfall and more fell during the night.  With strong winds forecast all day Thursday Mike Davis of the USGA has changed several of the pin locations on the steeply-sloped greens to ensure they are playable.

The prediction however is that by Thursday afternoon the surfaces will have dried out greatly in the sun and with the strongest winds forecast from 2pm onwards the afternoon starters will have by far the more difficult of the conditions.

“I would also say that if we get some of the top winds that they’re predicting, it doesn’t matter how slow the greens are and how flat the surfaces are,” Davis said. “You will see balls blowing, and that’s just the nature when you get up into 30-mile per hour plus, which we might get gusts.”

Those in the afternoon draw and 1.46pm include the Tiger Woods, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson grouping.

Bubba Watson, Jason Day and Brooks Koepka start at 7.40am on day one and thus should have the best of the weather.
