What did France do to deserve this?
The Open de France WAS one of the best events of the year.
It WAS a Rolex Series.
It WAS in a prime slot in Summer.
It's played on Le Golf National, one of the best courses on the European Tour.
Which just staged an epic Ryder Cup.

So what happened that it is now listed in the 2019 European Tour Schedule as a bog standard non Rolex event for October 17th when most top players will be taking a week off to prepare for the Race To Dubai finals?

The answer is MONEY.

Chinese tourism group HNA, who sponsored the event are in serious financial difficulty of their own  and not in a position to continue with the event.

No money—no prime deal with the Tour—and that is that.

But wait. The British Masters, widely tipped to be ditched got a last minute reprieve.  It has been pencilled in for the Hillside Golf Club beside Royal Birkdale with Tommy Fleetwood as host. I think thats a little win for the Tour but that event is also without a title sponsor and those in the know are saying the Tour are attempting to paper over the cracks with the fanfare.

The simple fact is the European Tour is moving East towards the money. The Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship will be a  Rolex Series event in 2019 and they've also confirmed an event in Saudi Arabia on 31st January 2019. Hmmmm.
