Zach Johnson 50/1

Zach Johnson specializes in going under radars. My intelligence sources however say he has to have a great chance at Atlanta Athletic Club to add to his 2007 Masters green jacket. According to shotlink stats last week Zach’s final round driving accuracy of 78.57% was over 20% better than the rest of the field average. His tied sixth at the WGC tallies with his tied third at the John Deere and shows he’s bang in form. Zach has been in the top 10 in the last two PGA Championships, finishing tied third alongside Rory McIlroy last year, just one shot behind Kaymer and Watson. Hasn’t won since last May at the Crowne Plaza but I bet he still remembers how.bet now

Jason Day 25/1

There something about Jason Day, something gritty, something determined. For a guy to hit 42% of the fairways last week at the WGC and still tie fourth is pretty darn impressive. Add to that he has come tied second at The Masters and then second outright at the US Open (where there are no fairways!) and you have a relatively experienced 23 year old who doesn’t seem to be fazed by being at the top of the leaderboard. Has to have learned a lot also from the final round last year when his 74 dropped him from a chance to win into a tie for 10^th. Surely an each way punt here is prudent betting.bet now 

Lee Westwood 12/1

You just never know with Lee Westwood. His final round of 65 shows he’s simmering nicely but you also get the feeling that this “best player never to win a major” collar is starting to cut into his neck. If Westwood is to win this week, he needs to hit the Athletic Club running. Final round charges like last weekend, or at Congressional where he surged to tie third will not suffice. Has the final piece of the Chubby slam been prophesied? Stan thinks so at 12/1 and so do I!bet now

Rory McIlroy 10/1

Rory McIlroy is the bookies favourite this week and it’s easy to see why. The way the PGA set up the courses seems to suit Rors. He tied third at Hazeltine in 2009 when Yang won and had the same finish last year at Whistling Straits when Kaymer took the spoils. Cruised into a tie for sixth last week without really trying. His greens in regulation stats are other worldly but it is Rory’s putting that will determine success or otherwise this week. At the US Open he putted brilliantly, but he hasn’t reproduced that since. Last week at the WGC he needed 1.8 putts per green as opposed to the whole field’s average of 1.77. So in a nutshell, if he putts he wins! bet now

Dustin Johnson 22/1

I’m going to disregard Dustin Johnson’s 48^th or whatever it was last week and say I think he’s a good each way shout this week. Not because he was (arguably) robbed of a place in the playoff last year but because he is rapidly proving he has a Major championship game. Okay so he imploded when GMac won the US Open last year but he was, again, in contention. And how admirably did he stick to his task at St. Georges in tying second. If a US player is to win, no one is more deserving than DJ. The man hits the ball a country mile!bet now

Best Of The Rest

2011 Irish Open Champion Simon Dyson flew out to the USA last week after only four hours sleep. His whirlwind journey took its toll with a first round 77 but he got back into the groove thereafter with three rounds in the 60’s. With better preparation and greens that will suit him this week, I think an each way punt from 100/1 is in order. He tied 12^th last year and has a career best tied sixth in 2007. Another man who caught my eye last Sunday was Aaron Baddeley 66/1, who certainly has the putting game for this course. The only problem for the Northern Trust champ is that he has never finished in the top 10 in a Major. And finally a couple of caddies have told me that Francesco Molinari is starting to find a bit of form again after a very lean spell. You can get him at 80/1. bet now
