The last time I met the popular CBS Golf radio host Kevin Allen was at the PGA Show in Orlando. He told then me about some sort incident between himself and another guy on the doorstep of his own house. He showed me the bruises and I thought that was that.
Now I learn today on his facebook page that Kevin was sentenced 15 years in prison after being charged with assault after that incident. He was given 25 years by the Judge who suspended the last ten years of it, meaning Kevin will have to serve 7.5 years.
A report in the Baltimore Sun covered the story. Incredibly it seems that though Kevin (called Kevin Collini in the report) was being attacked in his own home, he ended up being the one charged. It seems US law on self defence in your home differs to that here in Ireland. Here's a section of the report.
A missing political sign prompted a fight that led to one Street man being cut by another, the Harford County Sheriff's Office reported.
Michael Folino, 52, of the 3200 block of Conowingo Road, allegedly assaulted Kevin Collini, 55, at about 9:56 p.m. on Sunday after Collini noticed his signs promoting Jeff Gahler for Harford County sheriff were missing along Route 1 north of Bel Air, according to the statement of charges. But, according to online court records, it was Collini who ended up charged with assault.
Collini said he texted tenants in the apartment building and asked if anyone had seen his signs. He said he was in the middle of sending Folino a text when he heard someone banging on the door, according to the statement of charges.
When he opened the door, Collini said, Folino was getting in his face and allegedly threatening him, eventually allegedly shoving him backward and punching him on the side of his head, according to the statement of charges.
Folino allegedly kicked him in the knee and Collini said he kicked him back, according to the statement of charges. Collini said Folino then allegedly charged him and slammed shut the door of Collini's vehicle, according to the statement of charges.
Collini told police he ultimately pulled out a razor knife he had in his pants pocket and swung it at Folino defensively, according to the statement of charges. He said he struck Folino across the chest, but was not sure of his injuries, according to the statement of charges.
Folino was taken to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, according to the statement of charges.
His injuries were not life-threatening and he was released several hours later, Sheriff's Office spokesman Edward Hopkins said.
Police were initially planning to charge Folino, but later determined Collini is the suspect, Hopkins said Monday.
I know there are two sides to every story, but I'm sorry to hear of this outcome. It's hard to believe Kevin Allen has a violent bone in his body; my impression was always this super friendly guy with an infectious personality and a funny story to tell. Follow @golfcentraldoc
Chin Up Kevin. You will be missed at the PGA Show.
