Patrick Reed will miss out on a golden opportunity to endear himself to British and Irish golf fans over the next fortnight by cancelling his trip at the last minute.  Reed had been slated to play the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth and the Irish Open at Royal County Down but pulled out today citing “family reasons”.

Update: Reed posted this on his twitter account. There appears to have been a death in the family.

Update: He told the Golf Channel yesterday
“We have a family member who has been battling cancer and is now in hospice, and they say only has a few days if that left,” Reed wrote to Rosaforte in a text message. “So we don’t feel comfortable leaving the country at this time, and wanted to be able to go down and see him before he passes to say our goodbyes.”

Strangely however, Reed, is now appearing in the Colonial field - which was confirmed by the PGA Tour.  They said he entered Colonial last Friday which indicates he had his mind made up then.

Reed took up European Tour membership this year but it is unclear if and when he will play. There may some clue in a line of his statement which said "We will not be able to travel overseas at this time."
