Tiger Woods has confirmed he will hit the honorary first tee shot at next week’s  US Masters after being asked to do so by Arnold Palmer.  A statement published today on his official website TigerWoods.com said Woods, while still “working steadily towards a return to Tour golf,” would be honored “to stand in for Mr. Palmer” alongside Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player at the Augusta showpiece.

Here’s the full statement.

While my rehabilitation from surgery is still continuing, and I am working steadily towards a return to Tour golf, I am physically not yet back to the level I feel is required to compete in a Major Championship and so it is with regret that I must announce I will not be playing in this years Masters.  I have spoken at length to Chairman Payne, informed him of my status and thanked him for the invitation.

However I am excited and honored to announce that I will be on hand to fulfill the role of honorary starter in place of my good friend Arnold Palmer.  I flew down to Bay Hill three weeks ago on Mr Palmer’s invite and there he asked me if I would consider representing him on the first tee this year.  Mr Palmer reassured me that he WILL also be there in person but feels physically unable to tee it up on this occasion.  Needless to say I said “yes” immediately.  It will be one of the greatest honors of my golfing life.

More as it emerges.
