Full in depth betting preview and picks for the 2016 Travelers Championship on the PGA Tour including favourites discussion and Doc's five expert picks.
This week it's the 2016 Travelers Championship and here is my Betting Preview and tournament tips including favourites discussion and my five expert picks.
Travelers Championship, August 4th – August 7th, 2016
TPC River Highlands, Cromwell,, CT
Par: 70 / Yardage: 6,841
Purse: $6.6 million with $1,188,000 to the winner
Defending Champion: Bubba Watson
The WGC Bridgetsone has been Bubba’s only top-35 finish in his last six starts but he’s somewhat of a TPC River Highland’s expert. The defending champion and also the winner in 2010 Watson also has a solo 4th, T2 and T6 finish in the bank here over his last eight visits. It will very interesting to see if course form can outweigh current form.
Great too see Brooks and Rickie Elliot back at the PGA Championship and even better news that the injury layoff does not seem to have affected his form. Prior to the PGA Championship Brooks last two completed events were a T13 at the US Open and T2 at the St Jude Classic and I think being fresh and with a course that suits long hitters he can really contend this week albeit from short odds. Played the Travelers just once in 2014 finishing T51.
Reed has missed his last two cuts at TPC River Highlands but given the tournament’s much later this date in the calendar this year and his current form, he makes my five. His accuracy weakness off the tee wont be punished as hard as normal this week while his scrambling and putting prowess can really pay dividends. Top 15 in his last three events (PGA, The Open, Scottish) and the best putter in both UK starts. Best here of T18 in 2013; if Reed can straighten out just a little this week he can win here.
After missing the cut at The Open Casey was hugely impressive at Baltusrol. Equaled or bettered his score in each of the four rounds (69, 69, 68, 67) finishing T10. He is sure to be right up for this week on a course where he hit a field smashing 60 greens in regulation last year and just lost out in a playoff with Bubba Watson.
Is it a coincidence that Webb Simpson always seems to show up just when there’s some Ryder Cup Captain’s Picks up for grabs?! Another T13 at the PGA Championship make it four Top 15 finishes in his last six starts. Simpson’s last visit to The Travelers was in 2013 when he opened and closed with a 65 to finish T5 behind Ken Duke. T12 in strokes tee to green in the stats, if he can putt just a little better Simpson can come into a place. If he wins expect a thousand texts to Davis Loves phone, all from Webb!
Nobody expects anything of Ryan Moore this week as he seems to be struggling to find form. Having said that his last three starts have been in Majors so there might be some respite in what’s sure to be a low key (though well supported locally) event this week. Makes my tips because I know from experience with Moore that he CAN and DOES suddenly find form especially on a course he loves. And this is one of those places. Missed the event last year but from 2014 back to 2009 Ryan has had finishes including T5, T7, T2, T13 and T4 here clocking up 101 birdies and 5 eagles in the process. Don’t say I didn’t warn you!

Ryan Moore 66/1
Out of form Ryan Moore hopes to prove you can polish a sh*t this week. |
