The 2019 Irish Open takes place from the 3rd-7th July this year at Lahinch Golf Club; that's two weeks before The Open Championship.

It's a $7,000,000 Rolex Series event and you would imagine its the perfect preparation for any top professional before the Claret Jug run at Royal Portrush.

Play the Irish Open to get the competitive juices flowing, then travel an hour in a car to the quiet of the West of Ireland the following week to relax and practice on similar links like Carne, Connemara, Rosses Point, Ballyliffin etc, then head up to Portrush game ready?

Would that not make perfect sense for the likes of Tiger, Phil, Brooks, Sergio? Bring the family?

Unfortunately even with millions in the prize pot, it seems like player management and "show me the appearance money culture" are polluting the waters when it comes to event fields.

I cannot for the life of me understand how the Scottish Open, at The Renaissance Club could be a BETTER prep for players than the Irish Open at Lahinch?  The Renaissance Club albeit very plush and grand and exclusive is a new modern coastal links developed from woodland in 2008 and is a million miles apart in terms of golfing terrain from Royal Portrush.

Guys that have already committed to the Irish Open like Ian Poulter, Russell Knox, Louis Oosthuizen for me are on a winner.

Host Paul McGinley (with his amazing hair) has been on a personal quest to attract more big names to the Irish Open so expect more announcements in the coming days but for me its a no brainer!
