Apparently winning two Majors and a Ryder Cup is not good enough to secure the much coveted BBC Sports Personality Of The Year these days!

Despite making the journey to Glasgow to be present for the awards Rory McIlroy was beaten to the title by from Formula 1 champion Louis Hamilton.

Here's the moment Rory went up to collect his second place award.  The whole affair seemed to even take the BBC by surprise. They had congratulated Rory on their website for winning the top award, but quickly took the post down.

The voting was also surprisingly low with Hamilton receiving 209,920 votes - 33.8% of the total vote cast and McIlroy receiving 123,745 votes (19.9%).

Dont worry Rors, you'll win the Irish version.
