Despite missing the cut with Tiger Woods in Phoenix, caddie Joey LaCava had reason to celebrate yesterday after being promoted to Assistant Chief Burger Assembly Crew Member at a McDonalds restaurant in Connecticut.

LaCava received the happy news late on Friday night via email and was said to be “ecstatic” at the promotion.  In addition to his two days part time work on and off with Tiger Woods over the past year, he had been working with the global fast food giant as Waste Receptacle Attendant Crew Member and is said to have impressed management with his innate ability to stay patient at customers who threw half filled soda cups and ice into the waste bins.

LaCava was promoted to Burger Assembly Ingredient Getter Crew Member at the beginning of January and last week stunned colleagues by stepping in when a co-worker became ill, assembling regular burgers, cheeseburgers and Big Macs without any extra training.

Fellow workers at the McDonalds at 100 Main Street North in Southbury paid tribute to LaCava calling him “a natural” and “quiet but very assured” in the tricky, high pressure world of burger assembly, where one wrong slice of gherkin could result in an allergic reaction, food poisoning, death, or worse still, immediate dismissal. “He’s going straight to the top, and that’s making McFlurry’s” said co-worker Paul Gottleib, 47, who also works part-time at the Dunkin Donuts around the corner.

As well as a shiny new star on his nameplate, the promotion is also believed to net LaCava a windfall of $2 extra per hour, although some experts say this figure will reduce slightly when taxes are taken into account.

More as it emerges.
