Rory McIlroy was informed that had started cutting the fescue rough around Erin Hills, during his US Open press conference, triggering an attack on the players who complained.

I posted the picture of ground staff cutting away the fescue at Erin Hills on my twitter profile last night and said it was the saddest sight of the US Open.

Rory McIlroy was not happy on hearing they had cut the fescue.

Mike Davis and the USGA have completely capitulated to the likes of Kevin Na and all those who whinged about the rough height.  The USGA are clearly afraid to mess up again, given all that has gone before.

What most of the public didn't know was the fairways at Erin Hills average 60 yards in width and are some of the widest ever at a US Open.  So the fescue rough was not going to be in play anyway.

Rory McIlroy expressed dismay on getting the news that the strimmers were out during his press conference and put the whole situation perfectly in context.

Here's his reaction.
