After the first round of the 2014 WGC World Matchplay our four bracket tips, namely Jason Day, Rory McIlroy, Hunter Mahan and Matt Kuchar, all emerged unscathed. But what we know now is how some of the danger men are playing. Here’s my read.

Rory McIlroy came through his first round against Boo Weekley and faces Harris English today. The bookies, having liked what they saw from Rory yesterday have tightened his outright odds to 8/1.
The key match in the group could turn out to be the clash between McIlroy and either Schwartzel or Furyk, both of whom were impressive first round winners. Schwartzel in particular has been trimmed in to 22/1 overall.
Jimmy Walker looked imperious in his first round and now looks the man to progress from the lower half of the bracket.
Match Of The Day
Schwartzel vs Furyk: A clash of styles but both men playing well.
Summary:
I’m sticking with Rory McIlroy to come out of this bracket though Schwartzel and Walker are big dangers. The South African starts 8/11 favourite.

The round one “shock” came from George Coetzee who took care of Steve Stricker whose mind may not have been fully on the job after his brothers liver transplant.
My pre tournament bracket pick Jason Day looked very good in dispatching Thorbjorn Olesen and the Australian is now second favourite to win the title at 12/1.
In form Webb Simpson will have his own ideas of emerging from this group after a successful start yesterday.
Match of The Day:
Snedeker Vs Simpson: The clash of Ryder Cup teammates. Simpson is favoured at 8/11, but this one will be tight.
Summary:
I’m sticking with Jason Day who shone in round one.
The rest of the field will no doubt be pleased at the prospect of Jordan Spieth and Matt Kuchar potentially knocking one or the other out tomorrow. Matt Kuchar, my pre tournament pick, looked at home as ever on this sometimes cruel Dove Mountain layout while Spieth certainly didn’t have it all his own way against Pablo Larrazabal.
Both men are now quoted at 16/1 by the bookmakers, who believe the winner of that match will win the group.
Justin Rose however, on his comeback from a shoulder injury is not to be counted out.
Match Of The Day
Justin Rose Vs Ernie Els: Clash of the Major champions. Rose is 4/7 favourite but dont forget that Els 11/8 is a seven times world matchplay champion!
Summary
Will this Kuchar vs Spieth match come to pass? We’ll know later today. For now I’m still happy with pick Kuchar.
Zach Johnson got turned over by Richard Sterne yesterday and faces my pick Hunter Mahan today. I thought Mahan looked very impressive against Gonzo in round one.
Zach’s namesake Dustin Johnson again struggled with the course (he hates it) giving Peter Hanson a second round tie with potential Ryder Cupper Victor Dubuisson. The bookies still have Hanson at 8/1 just to come through this group with Bubba Watson now installed as favourite at 3/1.
Match Of The Day
For me the meeting of Graeme McDowell and the Asian sensation Hideki Matsuyama is the match of the day. GMac is 8/11 with Hideki 11/10.
Summary
Bubba’s length coupled with his confidence made him look the man yesterday but I have to stick with my pick Hunter Mahan.
