2014 RBC Canadian Open, July 21-27 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club:
The Canadian Open is always a tough one to pick winners, with its constantly moving location and its less than desirable slot following The Open Championship. This year Royal Montreal plays host. That’s where the 2007 President’s Cup was played when Woody Austin did his “Aquaman” impression and home favourite Mike Weir famously defeated Tiger Woods in the singles matches. Weir has missed three straight cuts since his solo second at the HP Byron Nelson, his only under par finish of the year to date.
Graeme McDowell 15/1
After a poor, by his standards, opening round at The Open, GMac improved every day with 69,68 and a Sunday 67 to finish T9. Add to that a T6 in Ireland and his win at the Open De France and you have a very confident player. Sponsored by RBC, Graeme will be grinding hard this week to, dare I say, prove a point to Rory that there’s more than one Northern Irish golfer in top form!
Jim Furyk 15/1
Lightly raced but coming into real form and he’ll know Royal Montreal from 2007. Played the US Open (T12) and Open Championship in successive tournaments and finished a superb solo fourth after a final round 65 at Hoylake. Seconds already this season at The Players and Wells Fargo, I really think a win is coming. Ninth in driving accuracy, 10th in total scoring, Jim just needs one good putting week.
Bo Van Pelt 60/1
Now on an eight event cut streak, Bo Van Pelt is beginning to bleep on my radar. I was really impressed by his Sunday 65 at TPC Deere Run in Illinois where Bo finished T7. Two top-7 finishes in his last three visits to Canada also with a T7 at Hamilton in 2012 and T6 at Shaugnessy in 2011. At 60/1 a with Betvictor freebet, I think those are excellent each way odds.

Charl Schwartzel 17/1
Two 67’s at Hoylake scored Charl a T7 finish at the Open Championship which made up for his disappointment at missing the cut at Pinehurst. Has shown well in a several events this year such as at Doral, Hilton Head, TPC Four Seasons and Muirfield Village but just hasn’t hit enough greens in regulation to set up a win. If he can reproduce the ball striking of last week however Charl could be in the mix this week.
Will McGirt 65/1
Should’ve done better than a T23 at the John Deere Classic last time out (74 on Sunday) but brings decent form to Quebec this week. Yes Will misses a lot of cuts but when he does play the weekend he’s a regular top-30 ish performer. Seems to love Canada with successive T2 finishes at Glen Abbey in 2013 and Hamilton in 2012.
I will be watching Tim Clark (75/1) and Jerry Kelly (90/1) with interest this week as they are two of my favourite players and both were in the top 5 at the John Deere Classic. Tim Clark especially so as he won his first ever event as a pro in Canada on a similarly short golf course. Also watching Bud Cauley (65/1) to see if he gets back on track after good finishes at The Travelers (T11) and Greenbrier (T4).
