Make sure you check my full betting preview for the 2014 US PGA Championship and video with Gary Murphy but whilst doing the research I came across these eye opening statistics which might just help you pick the winner of the final Major of the year.
The most consistent player over the last three PGA Championships is Keegan Bradley. Since winning at Atlanta Athletic Club in 2011, Keegs tied third the following season and scored a T19 at Oakhill. After a great week at Firestone, Bradley is again looking good for a big finish at Valhalla. Rory McIlroy has played in five PGA Championships tying third in his first two (2009, 2010) and returned after a blip in 2011 to win at Kiawah Island in 2012. He was also T8 last year and with two consecutive wins at the Open Championship and WGC Bridgestone is the favourite by a street this week. Tiger Woods ranks third most consistent though serious doubts hover over his participation after withdrawing at Firestone due to back spasms. Scott Piercy and defending champion Jason Dufner round out the top five.
If you add the three Majors to date in 2014 to the 2013 PGA Championship Rory McIlroy comes out on top as most consistent. Rors scored two T8’s at the 2013 PGA and 2014 Masters, T23 at the US Open and won the Open Championship.
Just behind in second is Rickie Fowler who was T18 at Oakhill and since then is T5, T2, T2 in the 2014 Majors. Rickie’s putting stats since the St Jude Classic have been nothing short of incredible and he has to be considered a live contender again this week.
Third and fourth on the list are Jim Furyk and Adam Scott. The super consistent pair have both been inside the top-15 in each of the last four Majors. Rounding out the list in fifth is Henrik Stenson.
Rory McIlroy and Sergio Garcia battled it during the final round of the WGC Bridgestone again last week and the pair are statistically the hottest players in golf at the moment. Justin Rose with his wins in Washington and Aberdeen comes in third, while Graeme McDowell since winning in France has carded three consecutive top-10’s to make fourth on the list. The surprise on the list is Marc Leishman who has three top 10’s in his last four tournaments including a T5 at The Open and a solo third at Firestone.
Former PGA Champions YE Yang and John Daly have dismal run-ins with Yang even disqualified from last week’s Barracuda Championship. Indeed Yang is one of only two players (along with Graham deLaet) who have played in the last four Majors and missed every cut. Ryder Cup stars from Valhalla Ian Poulter and Boo Weekley will also be hoping for a huge improvement this week.
The winner’s pool is always a great place to be coming into a Major. PGA Tour winners since the end of May are Adam Scott, Hideki Matsuyama, Ben Crane, Martin Kaymer, Kevin Streelman, Justin Rose, Angel Cabrera, Brian Harman, Rory McIlroy, Tim Clark and Geoff Ogilvy.
Statistically Rory McIlroy is dominating the world of golf right now by hitting his driver further than anyone else. In his last three tournaments he has been either first or second in driving distance pulverizing golf courses much like Tiger Woods in his prime. Interestingly Rory was only T25 in greens in regulation in winning at Hoylake but a T4 putting performance made all the difference. Nobody makes more birdies than McIlroy on the PGA Tour; he converts 37% of all birdie chances and is statistically the best putter from outside 25 feet on the PGA Tour.
