Favourite: Rory McIlroy 5/2

It’s hard to believe that a player is quoted at 5/2 for any golf tournament but it’s a reflection of just how good Rory is playing at the moment.  Winner at Wells Fargo last week and defending his BMW PGA Championship this week, everything is in the slot for the Holywood man at the moment.  A word of warning though; Rory has to be tired after tripping from North Carolina to London for a full day of Nike engagements on Monday and told Sky Sports he is only likely to play one practice round in the Pro Am on Wednesday.  Hardly the ideal prep, but hey, he’s Rory McIlroy and could still do it!

Doc’s Top 5 Players To Watch

Francesco Molinari 28/1

Plied his trade on the PGA Tour for much of the season to date and whilst on the face of it Fran hasn’t set the world alight over there, he produced field leading stats in fairways hit and greens in regulation combined at Arnie’s event and in Houston.  The putter may have been misbehaving there, but he showed with his T2 at El Prat last week that, given a tough track, he can contend.  Wentworth puts a premium on Molinari’s strengths and that has been seen in his finishes of T7, T9 and T7 in the last three years.  Full of confidence, Fran’s a great each way shout this week.

Luke Donald 28/1

I can actually hear you sighing as you read this because you think Luke is playing rubbish after missing cuts at The Masters and Players.  I would not be so quick to write him off however as he remains the horse for the course at Wentworth.  Since his T2 in 2010, Donald won back to back in 2011 and 2012 and finished T3 last year.  He knows to manage his game at Wentworth and it plays to his strengths.  And I saw enough in his T15 at Hilton Head and T7 at The Honda to keep the faith despite the gloom.

Richie Ramsay 45/1

With so many top names in the field this week there’s plenty of value down the order including Richie Ramsay each way at 45/1.  Since winning the Trophee Hassan, Richie scored a sound T11 in Shenzhen and solo 7th at the Volvo China Open.  Returned after a break with T15 in Spain last week, finishing with a 67.  Has a best of T9 at Wentworth in 2013 but I think he’s playing better than ever before.

Thomas Aiken 45/1

Tipped Thomas last week also and though he finished down in T15th, he was 9th in driving accuracy and led the field in greens in regulation so I think the selection was justified.  That brought Thomas to a pretty impressive seven Top-25 finishes from 10 starts this season and he returns to Wentworth following a T7 last year including a holeout from the fairway. Yes I remember stupid stuff like that!

Matteo Manassero 80/1

What does Rory McIlroy do when he’s not putting well? He gets a lesson from Dave Stockton.  Hopefully Matteo will get some putting tips before this week’s tournament because it’s the only aspect of his game that’s problematic.  To put this into perspective note that Matteo has been in the top 10 greens in regulation in his last four starts, but is not converting the chances.  T7 in 2011 and winner here in 2013.

Long Odds Glory Shots

David Horsey 110/1 has a new caddie Roy Clarke on the bag (ex Sandra Gal and Se Re Pak) and finished in eye catching fashion last week in Spain.  T7 in 2011 at Wentworth so knows how to manage the beast.

Robert Rock 125/1 is getting a great rep as a coach these days, but the lad still has game.  Usually produces one sparkling week in the year; maybe it’ll be here or in Ireland next week.  He may not have figured at the top of the leaderboard in Wentworth to date but has made six cuts from seven starts and I remember him hitting more greens than anyone here in 2014.  Like Matteo, Rob needs one good week with the putter!
