The R&A have released a statement on their website this morning, formally announcing that an asterisk "*" will be placed on next week's Open Championship.

Here is the statement

Statement on the Asterisk change to Open Championship Status

Following submissions it has received from individuals and organisations regarding the absence of the World Number One golfer from the 2015 Open Championship, the R&A have officially voted to downgrade the event by placing an asterisk "*" after it.

Following an extraordinary generally meeting to discuss the matter, members voted 967 to 4 in favour of adding the asterisk "*". The women voted against.

Chief Executive of  The R&A  Peter Dawson said, “It is with regret that we have to add the asterisk "*" to this years Open Championship but without Rory McIlroy playing, we felt we had no choice."

An asterisk "*" will now be placed on all material relating to the 2015 Open Championship.  The winner of the Claret Jug will have an asterisk "*" placed after his name on the trophy, and must not be afforded the same level of recognition as would be the case if the field was complete. All records, lists and archives relating to this years Open shall feature an asterisk "*".

Media organizations please note the asterisk "*" means all conversations relating to the 2015 Open Championship, must reference the asterisk "*" and the line "Well it wasn't like winning a real Major anyway because Rory McIlroy was missing."
