2015 US PGA Championship Betting Preview and Tips
Aug 10-16, Whistling Straits, Kohler, Wisconsin, USA
The Course
While the PGA Championship moves around its venues every year, Whistling Straits is one which pretty much everyone watching will remember for its dramatic conclusion in 2010. Yes that one where Dustin Johnson was deemed by officials to have grounded his club in a bunker/waste area on 18, thus relegating him from a potential playoff spot to a tie for fifth. That playoff was won by Martin Kaymer after Bubba Watson found water on the 18th hole after an epic three hole playoff.
Doc's "On The Nose" Pick: Dustin Johnson 12/1
Yes there may well be a little short in Dustin Johnson’s wiring somewhere, but I still like his chances on this layout. The world will remember his 2010 experience for grounding the club in the waste area deemed a bunker but I remember Johnson overpowering the layout and mincing the par-5’s. The knockers will point to him falling away at The Open Championship but I am thinking more about the T2 at the US Open in US weather conditions. Any man who racks up 11 under for the just the par-5’s at Whistling Straits has to be respected.
The nearly man of the Majors over the past couple of years has everything going for him at “Glory’s Last Shot” in Wisconsin. Firstly Day played in 2010 and acquitted himself well with a T10 finish. Second he’s fresh off a T9 at the US Open (even with a balance altering virus) a T4 at The Open and win in Canada. And thirdly, Jason’s batting off the tee this season has been immense. Couple that his excellent putting and it all looks good for the Aussie.
2. Bubba Watson 20/1
Bubba averaged 327 yards off the tee at Whistling Straits in 2010, and just lost out to Martin Kaymer in a three hole playoff. He may have any PGA Championship form since but Watson will fancy his chances this time around having scored a Summer win at The Travelers and solo second recently at the Canadian Open.
3. Rickie Fowler 20/1
Regular season winner always seem to front up at the PGA Championship, and with Rickie successful at both The Players and Scottish Open he represents a good value each way bet from 20/1. Tied third in 2014 at Valhalla, Fowler is becoming almost Jason Day like with four top-5’s in his last eight Majors. Solo second at the Quicken Loans to Troy Merritt a couple of weeks back says Rickie is in form.
4. Zach Johnson 45/1
The bookies think Zach Johnson lack of power off the tee will work against him at Valhalla and have pitched him at 45/1. But is that wise? In 2010 at Whistling Straits, Zach finished T3 driving it short, but made up for it with a T2 fairways hit clip and T7 putting performance. He finished that week just -4 for the par-5’s and still contended. Remember too that Johnson is playing for a place in history and chance to emulate Jordan Spieth as a multiple Major winner in 2015. Do not write him off.
5. Brooks Koepka 45/1
I’m going to stick with Brook Koepka in my five this week. I’m liking the way he has gone about his business since at a T3 at the St Jude and with enough Major Championship experience now under his belt, think this course will suit his big hitting game perfectly. T4 at the 2014 US Open, T18 at Chambers Bay and T10 at St Andrews.
Watch the progress of Marc Leishman from 80/1. The Aussie is a big hitter and solid putter and has developed a habit of contending in Majors. Played super at The Open Championship to reach the playoff.
Memorial winner David Lingmerth is at 100/1, and with good performances at Greenbrier and Quicken Loans since he has shown he’s no flash in the pan.
Robert Streb at 150/1 is a guy who has impressed me in the second half of the season with a nice tidy run since Memorial. Could do a David Lynn on it and grab a place!

"On The Nose" Win Market
Jordan Spieth and Rory McIlroy are pretty much inseparable with the bookies at 6/1. Just 17 then, Spieth wasn’t in the event in 2010 but he has done his reconnaissance in the build up. Swap rehabilitation for recon in the case of McIlroy who hasn’t teed it up in competitive action since injuring his ankle on the eve of The Open Championship.Doc's "On The Nose" Pick: Dustin Johnson 12/1
