Favourite’s Discussion

With Rory McIlroy absent this week it’s all about Justin Rose at 6/1
and who can argue?  It’s Justin and Fooch’s third visit to Lake Malaren and they’ve done great on both occasions; T6 in 2012 and T4 last year.  Confidence in the World Number 6’s camp is sky high too, coming off a win in Hong Kong and T2 at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.  Henrik Stenson is second in the betting at double the odds, 12/1.

Doc’s Top Five Players To Watch

Branden Grace 18/1

Oooo Branden does have that steely look of determination in his eye doesn’t he!  Instead of travelling his usual several thousand miles between events, this week the South African need only taxi the 35 miles between Sheshan and Lake Malaren.  So impressive in his T5 finish last week and I’m betting that on his fourth visit to Lake Malaren, Branden will better his previous best of T16 in 2014 by some margin.

Ross Fisher 50/1

Let’s just say Ross doesn’t have the greatest record of contending two weeks in a row of late but his T3 out of the blue (he had tanked in Turkey and missed three straight cuts before that) in Sheshan last week will have him heading to Lake Malaren full of beans.  Sixth in driving accuracy and 10th in greens hit last week and more of the exact same will surely see him contend again.  Ross finished T2 here in 2014, when Marcel Siem dramatically pipped both himself and Alex Levy in a playoff.

Bernd Wiesberger 35/1

It’s Bernd’s fourth visit to Lake Malaren and he has improved his finish each time; 2012-T40, 2013-T17 and 2014-T13.  You would think this big sprawling layout is tailor made for him, yet it’s getting to grips with the par-3’s here that has been the big Austrian’s issue.  Let’s hope that piece of the puzzle slots into place this time around.  A solid T17 at the WGC HSBC last week.

Paul Casey 22/1

Did not play this event last year but Paul Casey has some happy memories of Lake Malaren to draw from this week.  Topped the GIR stats here in 2013 on his way to a T8 finish and was T6 in 2012.  A solid T23 down the road at Sheshan last week followed a very impressive T5 at the PGA Tour’s Tour Championship.

Emiliano Grillo 45/1

Is Emiliano Grillo going to do a ‘Wreck It Ralph’ this week and crash the European Tour’s party?  Now a full time PGA Tourist (having won the Web.com Tour Championship) and already 2016 season winner at the Frys.com Open, Grillo returns to Lake Malaren where he topped he finished T8 last year.  Nobody hit more greens in regulation than the Argentinian then and with this new found confidence he has to be a major threat this week.

Long Odds Glory

It’s super to see Alex Noren 175/1 back on Tour after another injury interrupted season.  The Swede returned two weeks ago in Turkey after four months out with a stress fracture in his chest and is slowly getting back up to race pace.  This is nothing more than a sentimental punt, but fully fit, Lake Malaren is right up Alex’s street as he proved with his T6 in 2012.  If Thor can do it, so can Alex!
