Favourites Discussion

Rory McIlroy is my mind looking generous at 6/1 in the win only market this week.  His T6 finish in Turkey was helped by impressive stats; 3rd in driving distance, T11 in fairway’s hit and T9 in greens hit.  The weakness at the moment is the putter but if Sheshan plays as it did last year that wont manifest itself too much.  Rors has played here before in 2013 and was T6 then before they toughened it up.

Doc’s Top Five Players To Watch

Bubba Watson 18/1

Looking back on Bubba’s win here last year; it was the stuff of fairytale as time and again the improbable happened. From his chip in for eagle on the last in regulation to the winning tramliner in the playoff, Bubba chanced his luck and it just came up.  Having said all that I still think he can contend (and win) here this year and here’s why.  First of all his form since Canada has been excellent, two solo 2nd’s, a 3rd and a T5 at the Tour Championship.  Second, Bubba seems a lot more circumspect or safer in his golf this year; he’s been in the top-5 greens in regulation in 5 of his last 7 starts and has had no score worse than a bogey in 5 of his last 10 starts.  Lots of stats there but with a win and T8 in his last two visits two Sheshan and pretty much the only guy who can devour the 603 yard 8th hole every time, I’m all in each way.

Ian Poulter 45/1

I can’t put up the same defence for Poulter as for Bubba but I’m seeing positive things from Poults and think he can do well this week. Knows Sheshan well and performed excellent with a T6 last year and solo second when Dustin Johnson won.  Poults has improved his finish in each of last three starts and his T16 in Turkey last week included 20 birdies, a T15 putting performance and a very tidy stats package. Horse for the course; just needs the confidence to flow.

Adam Scott 22/1

Long odds for Scotty caught my eye after his impressive solo 2nd at the CIMB Classic in Malaysia last week.  That included at T2 in fairways hit, T9 in greens hit and T10 in putting performance.  Finished T12 here last year but I expect a much better showing this time around.  Has the length to score here.

Kiradech Aphibarnrat 66/1

Fourth WGC HSBC appearance for Kiradech and has a dismal best finish of T55. So why tip him?  Well I think this kid is destined for greatness and with a T4 at the Alfred Dunhill, T5 at Woburn and solo 3rd in Turkey who would bet against him?

Chris Wood 50/1

This week is a chance for Chris Wood to really mix it with the elite of the game and hoping he plays his best stuff.  What a super run he is on with a T4 at the Alfred Dunhill, T9 at Woburn, solo 2nd in Portugal and solo 5th last week in Turkey.  Accumulated -16 just on the par-5’s last week and a repeat would do very nicely on this track. Debut.

Long Odds Glory

Thorbjorn Olesen 150/1

If you are looking for a super long odds shot this week try Thorbjorn Olesen at 150/1.  Played really well to finish T6 here last year and showed in winning the Alfred Dunhill that class is permanent.  Results of late haven’t been great but Thor putted nicely in Turkey last week and is worth a look at long odds.
