Rory McIlroy is pretty much unbackable at 9/2 after a powerhouse performance last year.  In case you missed it, he won by seven, annihilated the par-4’s and 5’s and shot a 61 on Saturday.

Doc’s Top Five Players To Watch

Dustin Johnson 14/1

Dustin Johnson may not like the place but has the game and form to contend.
Woeful record at Quail Hollow and arguably is not to fond of the place seeing as he hasn’t been here since 2011 but is in terrific form and is one of the few with  the game to rival McIlroy.  First outing since aT4 at The Masters where he led driving distance and was T7 in putting.  Solo third in Houston before that where he was 4th in driving and first in putting!  All bases covered so!

JB Holmes 30/1

JB Holmes. Bludgeons it.
Generous odds in my opinion for JB Holmes.  Yes he missed the cut here last year but also won the event in 2014 and is impressive form this season.  I make it six top 15 finishes from his last seven starts including a T11 in Texas last time out when he again mixed bludgeoning the driver further than anyone else with finessing his irons to  a T5 GIR clip.  He’ll be up there this week.

Kevin Chappell 45/1

Kevin Chappell's "in the zone" look.
Solid of late with a T4 last time out in San Antonio to go with a T9 at Harbour Town and solo second at Bay Hill.  Chappell is long enough to handle Quail Hollow and finished T16 and T11 on his two visits.  Coming in this year in better form, an each way result is possible.

Phil Mickelson 28/1

Phil's world. Where every bet is a sure thing?
Ordinarily Phil would not make my five but I’m finding odds of 28/1 just too good to pass up.  Phil’s has strayed in the betting after missed cuts in Texas and a disappointing Masters but Quail Hollow is a course that suits his eye and he’ll be keen to make a statement ahead of the 2017 PGA Championship which will be staged here.  Never missed a cut in a dozen starts here with eight top 10’s.  Solo second in 2010, third in 2013 and T4 last year.  Still ranks second in the 2016 scoring average and fifth in strokes gained total so don’t count Phil out.

Gary Woodland 60/1

The time Gary made the lad in the chair crash into the tree!
Apart from a fruitless trip to Bay Hill, Gary has been improving steadily and Quail Hollow is the type of course where he, like Rory McIlroy, should enjoy an advantage off the tee.  Never outside the top four in driving distance at any event this year, Woodland has finished T18 and T4 in his last two Wells Fargo starts.

Long Odds Glory Shot

Lucas Glover won here in 2011 and has made his last four cuts (good for Lucas!)  His T31 last week at TPC Louisiana included a T7 in driving accuracy and T8 in greens hit.  125/1 if you fancy an each way flutter.
