Betting preview tips and predictions for the 2016 WGC Bridgestone Invitational in Akron Ohio.
2016 WGC Bridgestone Invitational
Firestone C.C. (South), Akron, Ohio
Par: 70 / Yardage: 7,400
Purse: $9.5 Million with $1,612,432 to the winner
Defending Champion: Shane Lowry
With the event falling foul of Keith Pelley and the European Tour Rory McIlroy has been lured to Paris leaving Jason Day as favourite at 11/2. I think though that Brooks Koepka looks a better bet in this category at 20/1. Brooks is coming off a T13 at Oakmont and seconds at the St Jude and Byron Nelson and was T6 here on his debut last year. I’ll be having a flutter on Team Koepka myself at those odds.
For a man with such a fine record in Akron, Justin is way out at 25/1 after missing the cut at the US Open. Was that due to rust or continuing problems with a back injury or both? I’m leaning more towards rust and find it hard to ignore a man with five top 10’s from 11 starts in this event including a 3rd in 2015 and T4 in 2014.
Showed his pedigree with a T5 at the US Open just when it mattered. Branden is having a great 2016 with wins at The Heritage and in Qatar and could be a dark horse for Troon. Best of 17th from three visits to Firestone but lightly raced and this five week date change falls nicely for the South African.
Why not Shane at 28/1? What better way to get over his T2 at the US Open than get straight back on the horse at Firestone? Won in fine style last year and forecast rain could suit him more than others. Believes now that he belongs with the world's elite. Not to be discounted.
One thing is for sure, this 7,400 yard par 70 might seem long, but it never stopped Jim Furyk contending here. A stellar record of 10 top-10 finishes from 16 visits to this event with three of those coming in the last four years (3rd in 2015). T21 last week at Congressional, T2 at the US Open and fully fit again after a long stretch on the sidelines with injury.
Charl’s T23 at the US Open belied a T6 in fairways hit and T12 in GIR and I think he could have a good week. T11 at Memorial recently and T5 at the ISPS Handa Global Cup on the Japan Tour last week. Best in Akron of T4 in 2014 so knows how to play this course.
Danny was T6 on his debut here and has the perfect game for the course. Accurate off the tee and hits lots of greens in regulation. Not in the best of form of late but did have four top 35’s from the Wells Fargo to the Dean and Deluca.
Also there is Emiliano Grillo at 100/1. He makes his debut this week and comes off a confidence boosting T2 in Japan.
