Hirsute Charl in his new PXG hat.
You might think the last thing a player would want to do is change his equipment at a Major Championship but that is exactly what Charl Schwartzel did two days before The Open Championship, changing from Nike to PXG.

The South African who won three times in the last nine months with his Nike equipment admitted he hadn't ever picked up a PXG golf club until Tuesday of last week.

How bad must things have been with Nike for the sudden departure?  Was there an almighty breakdown of communications with Nike? Did Nike drop him? Or offer much less money to continue than previously?  Or was it that Nike are getting out of the golf equipment completely and Schwartzel was the first to find out?

PXG have been throwing money at big players this year but even boss Bob Parsons couldn't believe how quickly the change happened.

"We didn't ask him to (play our equipment) at the Open," Parsons said. "That was his call. But we're certainly glad he's putting it in play."

Schwartzel put nine PXG clubs in his bag straight away, including an 0811X Prototype driver, 0311 3- and 5-irons, 0311T 6-PW and an 0311T 54-degree wedge. He has kept a Nike Vapor Fly 3-wood,  one Nike wedge, a Callaway lob wedge and Ping putter.

At time of posting he's currently flying up the leaderboard, so something is working!
