Amid wild scenes at 7.30am this morning in Pulheim Germany, over 100,000 fans turned up to watch their nations hero David Hasselhoff hit the ceremonial opening tee shot at the BMW International Open.

The European Tour event is being staged at Golf Club Gut Hasselhoff, named after the 65 year old former Baywatch actor.

The event was officially opened on Wednesday with a concert headlined by "The Hoff" who sung songs from his 1985 debut album, Night Rocker which sold 90 million copies in Germany and four more around the world.

"I remember when David first invaded Germany in the 80's" said European Tour chief Keith Pelley. "He is an extremely skilled physically and ideologically divided country bringing together person through the medium of children's songs."

Hasselhoff, for his part, is waiting to see if anyone wins his hole in one prize.  "I've got this amazing Black Trans Am to give away for the first hole in one," he said.  "It's actually a talking car, the turbo boost on it is totally shagged and it does about six miles per gallon, but it drives well."

More as it emerges.
