We all watch the PGA Tour on a Sunday night. East Coast events are usually done and dusted by 11pm, midnight at the latest.  Sometimes we get excitement, mostly at the smaller events we get a more gentle conclusion with someone holding a clutch putt to seal the deal. The Travelers Championship was heading for the latter with Harris English, having had his moment of glory on 18, waiting patiently on the range for others to finish and the news that he had won. Instead word came through that the virtually unknown Kramer Hickok had rammed in a birdie on the last to set up what was to become one of the longest and most enthralling playoffs in PGA Tour history.

Eight holes of sudden death like you have never seen before.  Not of quality, but of sheer heart and guts. Par par par par every time sounds boring, but time and again those par putts were hangers on for dear life.  "Surely he cant get this?..... Yes he just did!" was said at least five times in the process.

The sleep timer on the TV was reset twice before Harris English finally sealed his second his win of the season with a 16 foot birdie on the umpteenth playing of 18.  We had a winner.  But in reality we had two winners. English, Hicock….and golf. Make that three.

How He Did It

For English it was his second win of the season in 21 starts, having also won the Sentry TOC 14 in a playoff. Using an Ping G400 driver he hit 42 fairway for the week (T11 in the field), averaging 296.9 yards. The 31 year old then found 54 greens in the right number with his Ping Blueprint irons, for a T15 stats clip. He went on to take 113 putts total with his Ping Scottsdale Hohum putter to tally 18 birdies versus 5 bogeys for the week. 

English ranked 9th in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee (3.681), 32nd in Strokes Gained: Approach (1.486), 8th in Strokes Gained: Around (2.863), and 18th in Strokes Gained: Putting (3.959).
