Many sports have seen a sporadic rise of interest across the United States of America, and none come with a greater intrigue or a vast rise of attention than golf with more sport fans looking to further indulge their interests into one of the world’s most frequently played sporting pastimes.
Golf, as a sport, is still one of the world’s most profusely watched and vastly competitive sports with numerous competitions and cups available for individuals to compete in at a range of different levels.
It is also a sport that brings a great challenge to any competitors and suitable for excellent viewing for all spectators which has been further merited with a great rise in the sports interest across the US in recent years.
One of the main reasons for this sudden upsurge in interest likely stems from the drama that the sport provides as most games can result in nail-biting encounters that can go down to the wire.
Despite such a popular viewing, golf is often seen as being a sport that only attracts a much older target audience rather than gaining the plaudits of younger viewers, which in turn has made it a challenge for golf to compete with a number of other popular US sports that still gain a larger traction from it’s demographic.
In spite of this, golf is still attracting a number of spectators at a range of events that has seen this meteoric rise continue to develop and gain intrigue from a larger field of suitors despite the regular broadcasting attention that a number of other coveted sports and leagues may often receive.
Rising numbers of golf viewers:
The numbers certainly do not lie when stating the overlapping traction that golf is gaining towards its spectators as major tournaments are now being observed by millions of viewers all across the world with the US being no exception.
2020 saw the largest net rise in golf participations in 17 years with 24.8 million people now being avidly equipped and regularly playing the sport which is a two percent increase over participations in 2019.
There is also a larger number of new golf players/novices as well as an accounted 36.9 million viewers who have tuned into a golf broadcast which in turn is an eight percent rise over the previous year and an estimate twenty percent rise over the last five years, which is a further testament to how many more people are becoming more engaging and interested with the sport as a whole.
While the pandemic has made matters challenging for most individuals or groups to begin actively participating at golfing events, there has certainly been a major upsurge in the number of people who have become interested and further invested with golf with future increases likely on the horizon.
Competing with other major sports:
Given that the US has a splurge of broadcasts for a number of sporting events, it comes as no surprise that golf is facing a major influx in competitiveness from other rivaling sports including football, basketball, baseball, soccer and ice hockey all being more profusely viewed by sporting fans.
While there are many reasons for why more fans are likely to tune into different sporting events over golf matchups, sports betting is often a major reason why fans remain entertained for such events.
The NFL provides fans with a wide range of teams and upcoming games/competitions that attract a huge number of fans to both attend games and tune into its regular broadcasts.
Betting on leagues such as the NFL helps keep viewers indulged and highly interested in any ongoing or upcoming games and league’s and while golf does provide fans with a wide variety of sportsbooks and outlets, it does not garnish as much attention or gain a greater intrigue compared to most other major leagues and sports.
Given that more viewers are now tuning into golfing events and competitions, this could likely change in a few years but leagues such as the NFL and NBA are already more extensively watched by fans across the country and the rest of the world.
Golf’s upsurge has been nothing short of impressive, but it would still take a greater influx before it can truly become a wider competitor to more casual sporting fans who may not be fully interested in most broadcasts.
One of golf’s most prestigious events the 2021 US Open was met with a greater number of audiences as 5.7 million viewers tuned into the final round which is the largest number to tune into a golf broadcast since the Tour Championship back in 2018 further emphasizing that golf has seen a greater amount of curiosity from all sporting fans.
As more fans become further indulged in the sports regular broadcasts and are further participating in more golf related hobbies, spectators continue to pour into events which is certainly making the sport a greater competitor in the fluctuated sporting markets.
Sports such as soccer have also garnished a greater interest from US audiences in recent years as more fans are now tuning into local MLS games and domestic/international competitions across the world with golf also veering on a similar pattern.
There is still expected to be further increase in spectators and active participants at golfing events in the coming years, with the sport become a greater commodity for a wider number of US audiences.
