Rob Hogan wins the 2022 Irish Speedgolf Open at Dundrum House.

Dundrum House Hotel and Golf course has successfully hosted the 2022 Speedgolf Irish Open.

It was all to play for with a stellar internatioal field flying in to contest the event headlined by Irishman Rob Hogan and American players Scott Dawley, Wes Cupp and Lauren Cupp.

In the end it was Hogan who took the title and the amazing tournament ‘Bell’ trophy that was presented by Dundrum House club president Kathleen O’Neill. Scott Dawley was in second place with Wes and Lauren Cupp occupying 3rd and 4th place.

Hogan, who is a PGA golf coach at Dundrum said that it had been a dream week... “To organise this event, to host some of the best players in the world and show off the course here at Dundrum has been an honour and to win is the icing on the cake.”

Everyone from owner Jeff Leo, to head Pro Marian Riordan, from the greens team led by Brian Webster to the huge volunteer squad led by Kathleen and Dessie O’Neill have been unbelievable”. There is no way this would have happened without them!” Hogan also paid tribute the tournament sponsors, Speedqueen Launderettes, reliefchefs.ie, O’Dwyer Steel, Robert Hurley electrics, The Pillo Hotel and Jean Hogan who sponsored the ‘Ewan Hogan Prize’.

Speedgolf is gaining traction around the world and Michael Ryan, chairman of the local Dundrum Athletics club, who laced up his boots and entered into the fray himself for his first Speedgolf experience summed up one of the huge attractions of the sport. Ryan, a busy Dairy farmer and family man said, “Doing this I get fitter AND play golf. I believed I hadn’t time for both. This has opened a new horizon.” Talking about fitness and playing Golf , Hogan blazed around the course in under 39 minutes on both days while the trio of Dawley, Cupp and Cupp managed golf scores of 73, 74 and 74 respectively. Accomplished XC runner Luke O’Sullivan from Galway won the junior prize while crowd favourite Gary ‘Big Bill Sobczak’ took the Senior Prize.

Women and men competed in the same overall category with ladies playing off Red tees and receiving a time bonus of two minutes and twenty seconds per round. Hogan said that this was based on observations of Women’s and Men’s running records. “We are committed to finding the best possible system to allow Men and Women to compete for the very same title and Prizemoney!” The tournament was finished in style with singer Seannie Riordan singing ‘Slievenamon’ to the delight of the crowd. Hogan plans to grow the event year on year and commenting on the festival feel of the tournament he quipped that “We don’t want to be bigger than the Ryder Cup, we want to be bigger than Woodstock!”
