The Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California will have a star-studded locker room this week. Even the GOAT Tiger Woods is back in action alongside Rahm Rory Scheffler and co.

The Riviera Country Club is known for being one of the most challenging courses on the PGA Tour: tight fairways, difficult bunkers, and fast greens. With a par of 71, the course measures just over 7,300 yards, short by Tour standards but tough. More detail on the course under the tips.

The last event of the West Coast Swing has a total purse of $9.3 million, including a winner's prize of $1.67 million.

Tony Finau 16/1

Key to this event for Tony will not be his distance off the tee but his accuracy.  Pummelled it on average 324 yards hitting 28 fairways in Phoenix last week for yet another top-20 finish but that strategy simply wont work at Riviera where putting yourself in position to hit as many greens as possible is crucial. Second twice here in 2021 and 2018 and in the form to really push for the win….if he gets the tactics right.

 

Viktor Hovland 30/1

Gave the winner an eight shot lead after round one last year but battled to T4 thanks to heavy scoring on the par-5's.  T5 on his debut on his debut the year before.  Playing his third week in a row, he'll be up to speed and dangerous.

Collin Morikawa 22/1

Missed the cut last week in Phoenix but you've to think of that as a blip given a 3rd at The Farmers and 2nd at the TOC.  Went a cumulative -10 on the par-4's at Riviera last year on his way to solo second behind Joaquin Niemann (now on LIV).  Got to be your shortlist.

Sam Burns 30/1

Comes in off a T6 in Phoenix and T11 at La Quinta…. a man in form.  This time last year he was a man bang out of form missing his third cut in a row.  But look back to 2021 where Sam led all the way before slipping to third on Sunday.  He'll surely be in the mix here.

Jason Day 40/1

No course form here and has only played the event five times in his entire career, yet Jason Day is a live each way bet this week. Four top-20's from his last five starts, T7 at The Farmers, 5th in Phoenix with super driving, iron and putting stats.

Long Odds Glory Shot

Tyrrell Hatton 50/1

Looking for some longer odds guys I see Adam Scott at 60/1 who loves this place and can show up on any given week and contend.  But I'm drawn to Tyrrell Hatton who has only played this event once in 2019 and missed the cut but who has the perfect game for this track and the form to contend.  T6 last week make it three top-10's from his last four starts with the formula of fairways and greens.  Will need to make some putts but overpriced for me at 50/1. 

Riviera Country Club Notes

Riviera Country Club is a classic, old-school course that demands precision and strategic play. The course measures 7,322 yards and has relatively large targets of around 7,500 square feet. However, sticking approaches on the green can be a challenge, and the course is known to be tough to get on and close to the hole. The greens are Poa annua and could border 12½ feet on the Stimp.

One of the primary challenges of Riviera is the need to hit fairways and hit greens. The rough is only an inch-and-a-half high but its pure kikuyu and tough. This means that the course can be unforgiving to those who don't play it strategically. Course management is key to success at Riviera, and players who can avoid mistakes and keep their shots on target will have an advantage.

Despite the challenges, the trio of par 5s on the par 71 course also presents an opportunity for players to capitalize as can those who have a sharp short game.
