There were big crowds out there for today's Irish Open Pro Am and we finally got to see how the course is playing.

It's not the marauding beast many had expected but playing very short by Tour standards.  Most players only hit a handful of drivers off the tee today; the firmness of the links fairways mean balls are running over 100 yards on landing.  You hit driver in the wrong place and you risk running the ball through the fairway and into trouble.

Will the hard pan conditions suit Rory McIlroy?  The jury is split about how he handles links golf and his ball control in the wind but one thing is for sure, he's in a totally different mood and form than last week at Wentworth.  He is up for this.  Winning will be difficult however, the shorter track brings a lot more players into the mix.

Will the weather mixed with the course conditions have a bearing? They could do but I was surprised just how well the field were handling the course. There are a lot more guys than I first reckoned that can score here.

Bring it on!
